Taycan repair - small crack in my rear bumper

My Taycan went in for a recall and porsche contacted me saying that i have a small crack in my rear bumper. I asked them to do a smart repair near the tailgate button but they have refused and said that the body shop suggests a replacement.
Why wont Porsche just carry out the repair?

Just take it to an independent body shop. It’s my understanding Porsche has a general policy where they do not repair items whether mechanical or cosmetic, the policy is replace period.

Agree completely with the local Body Shop. Most places can do “plastic“ repair. I just had my 2012 911 GTS front bumper repaired when somebody with a trail hitch backed in and put a hole about 2 inches around. Totally cannot tell anything is wrong anymore.

I had a scrape on my rear bumper—someone did it to my parked car. I took it to Amatos here in San Diego, an excellent repair shop. They repaired or replaced the bumper, but then they had to send it to a Porsche dealer to reprogram the electronics. The cost is high. Just the reprogramming was about $1700 as I recall, could have been more. There are no cheap repairs, but does your small crack really matter?

a smart repairer could easily fix that. CAGCTG - front bumper requires calibration . I don't think the rear requires the same.

I think he wrote "repairer".

But I have been told that repairs of cracks/splits in the bumper cover will eventually fail. My Cayenne was rear ended on two separate occasions and both times the adjuster allocated for some bondo and paint and both times the body shop had them change it to new bumper cover and paint as they would not guarantee the repair the way the insurance company estimated.

What is a “smart” repair?

S.M.A.R.T. repair, which stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technique. So when you have small damage like scratch , dent or minor crack, a smart repairer will fix/fill and paint that area.
Usually do it on site as a mobile service. Quite common in the uk.

of course they could have been scamming me, but the Porsche dealer said it had to be reprogrammed.
