You'd figure Porsche might have a harder time selling 911 Turbos electronically restricted to 80 mph, as that doesn't really get the blood pumping. Hopefully the GPS would know to switch the finger-wagging off at a designated racetrack.

This will never pass, and is probably one of the dumbest bills to be proposed in a long while. Aside from just obvious reasons, there's so many caveats why this would never work and would instead be potentially dangerous for everyone involved...

Limiting a car to 25 in a 15mph school zone might make sense, but limiting to 75 in a 65 doesn't. It'd make more sense to limit to something like 150% the speed limit, IMO.

People going by my house at 50mph (it's a 25 zone) feels super dangerous, but someone driving in control at 90mph in a 65 in the fast lane with a capable vehicle on dry roads in minimal traffic seems pretty low risk.

Of course I want everyone else on the road to have this feature enabled... but not my car. And most everyone else will want the same for themselves. it's normal to want everyone else to act safely and within reasonable limits but "downright un-american" to want to have your own behavior limited, even behavior that is dangerous.

Oh and the snarky version: That's what we get for driving like selfish and confused idiots instead of driving like Germans on the Autobahn. I love the Autobahn.

Now fast forward n years to when I'm old and actual self-driving cars really exist. Then no problem, go for it.

Agreed. I'm a much safer driver going 90-95 in open freeway than a driver going below speed limit while on their phone...

Good point. I'd rather see some automated enforcement of phone use than automated enforcement of speed limits. Probably would save more lives, and pedestrians, too.

If this were to go into effect for 2027 models one things for sure: there would be a LOT of 2026 cars sold in California ... and I'd be buying one of them. Secondly, what about cars bought in other states and moved to California? Can't believe this could come to pass, esp. on this timeframe.

If CA were an independent country, it would be close to the top five in terms of economy. About 1 out of every 10 US residents live here. It's a pretty diverse population.

Non-California-residents don't have much of a reason to comment; having said that, we all ought to be concerned about regulations that CA chooses to impose on new vehicles; afaik an entire coalition of (US) states automatically adhere to CA's clean standards. If they can make the case that lower speeds -> lower emissions (which Germany is trying to do as well), a lot of us will be buying new cars in 2026.

If I drive 55 mph on my regular freeway commute, I'll be a hazard to traffic. Everyone is going 65+, so imagine trying to drive in a situation where your only option to change lanes if you're blocked is to brake. It's not speed that kills, it's speed differential. Maneuvering around a vehicle going significantly slower than the surrounding traffic is way more dangerous than exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph. This has got to be the stupidest idea I've ever heard about driving on public roads.
