I see that you have a Range Rover on the garage. Which do you really like better, the Range or the G-wagen? I will be on the market for one in a year. I’m not getting rid of my Taycan but I will sell my 2020 RR autobiography.

2025 LWB RR (3 row). Just arrived last month. My wife loves the RR, hates the G-Wagon, go figure. She was always a Mercedes girl. I like the G-Wagon a lot more - feels more sporty to me.

G Wagon. Seriously

Effect on Society
In the event of a pedestrian walking out in-front of the car doing 20 mph (like in all the villages in East Lothian), with a front end like that, the G Wagon is lethal.

Porsche Taycan Turbo
11. Front bumper low enough to try and mitigate impact damge to pedestrians 10/10

Mercedes-Benz G580:
11. Front bumper low enough to try and mitigate impact damge to pedestrians 0/10

Sorry Guys, G Wagon not designed for UK roads.

@amelen , try to stay out of East Lothian.
Or anywhere where a pedestrian may cross the road.

One of the most bonkers safety regulations is the gulf in pedestrian safety requirements between cars compared to SUVs and trucks.

The G for sure is a TANK. Feels very safe inside of it, but for sure would cause a lot of damage to anything it hits (given the height and crazy weight of the G580).
I think it has a separate chassis rather than being unitary construction which is difficult to design for progressive energy absorption so the peak deceleration experienced by passengers in a crash is higher than that of a car, so big trucks are not as much safer than cars as their visual impression may imply.

They aren't all the same so generalisation is a mistake ( they are much better nowadays than a few years ago) but it is a common misapprehension that one may be safer in a SUV than a car.
SUVs and trucks are more likely to have an accident in a given situation than cars because of weight, lower grip tyres and high C of G making rollover more likely.

I would prefer to see more overhead bridges for pedestrians. Seems like a better alternative to making cars safer to hit people with. IMO.

Depends on the SUV - for the G Class: "EuroNCAP gave the G-Class a full five-star overall rating". But yes, I agree. I was able to handle high-speed maneuvers a lot better in my sedans vs. SUVs.

I have looked at the details of the EuroNCAP G-class tests.

Not very practical in towns, any more than banning trucks and SUVs from built up areas (my preference).
Neither are going to happen.

Great review, enjoyed reading and watching. I have a 2021 Taycan Turbo S and a 2020 G63 (bought the Porsche first). I thought about the G580 but needed something sooner. They are complimentary in my mind, with the G being ICE for long trips and bigger for family stuff. I think the Taycan is nicer and better built ironically. Also wish I had a touchscreen/MBUX in the G but oh well. Enjoy the new ride!!

Thank you! For me, the G580 was sort of a combo of a G63 + Taycan. 2025's have touchscreen/MBUX and lots of other new goodies (including dynamic multi contour seats that harden up the bolsters based on the direction the car is leaning into). I'll do a full review on the G580 after like a month of ownership.

Awesome! I could definitely see myself consolidating the two into a G580 in the future. The G is in the shop for a service and we have been driving a 2024 GLS430 loaner…I’m jealous of MBUX. We do have massage seats and the bolsters that push against you during turns in the G63 though…very nice feature.

As a daily driver, I actually like the G more. It has more useful features - the massage & bolsters you mentioned. The dynamic cruise control is very good (I never had that on my Taycan). The sound system sounds better then the BOSE on the Taycan. It's definitely not as "sport" and if you're going to be doing any spirited driving, there is no comparison. For my daily driving to drive around a family of 4 (plus a dog), the G seems to do it slightly better.

Similar to the Taycan's, you can probably get a G580 at/below MSRP right now. G63's are still $25k over mostly.
