Hi there

For those in So Cal, has anyone managed to get the 22kW/h charging to work? Vehicle has the needed hardware and I’m using the porsche mobile charger evse (the one with the LCD screen). Would love to hear some success stories!

cheers

maximum charge rate with a mobile ev charger (evse) in north america is 9.6 kw - 22 kw is impossible and not supported in any way shape or form

maximum charge rate on a hardwired non-mobile EVSE in north america is 19.2 kw - 19.2 kw charging requires a few things
  • a 19.2 kw wall mounted evse like the Porsche Wall Charger - not the mobile unit
  • a 100 amp dedicated 240v circuit
  • the EVSE must be hard wired, not mobile or plug based
  • your taycan j1.1 must have the optional factory installed 22/19.2 kw OBC (on board charger)
  • model year 2025 and later Taycan have a max charge rate of 11kw / porsche does not offer the 22/19.2 kw OBC option for these model years
22kw is a european thing and not a north american thing!

19.2 kw charging is rare in north america and mostly not a common thing due to cost, requirements, building codes, and nominal residential electrical capacity!

mostly it seems you are very confused about Ev charging and haven’t read any existing EV charging threads

there are very very few 19.2 kw chargers you are likely to encounter while traveling away from home - most non-fastDc chargers are 4-8 kw with occasional 11 kw ev chargers at hotels/businesses/malls

many many north american EV’s are 11 kw or less max charge rate and only gen 1 north american taycans even had the option

good luck!

turn your porsche charger over and look at the sticker on the back (opposite the lcd screen) - you will see the 40 amp 9.6 kw max charge rate printed right on the back!

all north american mobile EV chargers are limited to 9.6 kw max charge rate in north american since 50 amps is the maximum NEMA plug capacity

19.2 kw charging requires a 100 amp
breaker so it’s 2x the capacity of a NEMA 14-50/6-50 outlet.

short answer - not going to happen

and you will rarely find a 19.2 kw public EV charger - they simply are not a thing and quite rare!

Worth noting for those who don’t realize this, the kW rate shown in the car is after all the losses, so even when charging at 19.2kW, the Taycan will only show in the low 17.x kW. For example my Taycan is currently charging at home at ~19.0kW (80A x 238V) and it shows 17.1kW on the screen and the MyPorsche app.

Read the last two links. There are documented issues with Taycans equipped with the 19.2 kw charger. Originally I planned to do the 100 amp hardwire install and searched (low priority) for a 19.2 kw equipped car. I dodged a bullet. Even at my 40 amps charger, I can get close to a full charge every night including starting the charge after midnight due to TOU pricing.

IMO if your use case requires 19.2 kw (full charge time in 5 hrs), then you should probably DCFC .

Interesting.
When i was charging at work, 32A, 380V… there was always 22kw on display in the car.
At home, i charge at 14A, and i can se 9,2Kw on both screens, in the car and on the phone…couldn’t recall what’s on the screen on the charger 🤷‍♂️

Interesting, mine always shows after losses power, even if I go on lower power EVSEs. My EVSE doesn't actually show any numbers, but I have other measurement equipment which tells me the voltage and current. I never bothered comparing the kW number showing on DC chargers vs. on screen in the car - I will try to remember next time I go on a road trip in a Taycan.

Sometimes, i’m monitoring all three screens: inside the car, Ionity DC and app…numbers are the same, but there’s a second delay on app…

Just to add to that, the European’s have changeable input power cables which are interchangeable but to do 22kW you need the three-phase cable and a three phase 240V supply. Which are not the norm outside industrial premises.

I have never seen a public L2/AC charger higher than 10kW in So Cal.
Most commercial installations are 208v 32A, good for just under 7kW. That's been the most common experience anyway. Maybe there are pockets of true 40A+ L2 in private lots?

Thank you sir, very helpful !

My use case doesn’t require it, I just have an absurd optimization OCD problem. lol.

Same reasoning here, no, I realized how difficult it is to find a 19.2 kw car with my other must have options.

And then on top of it my electrician convinced me not to go through with the install

Another option to explore is to install a 25kw DCFC at your residence. This will require the same 100 amp hard wire. The downside to this is the DC fast charging does not have time of use Charging profile configurations.
