lol funny enough this is much more expensive to service then my FerrariWhat the...?!?!
Good grief. Between this thread and learning the 12v Li-ion battery is north of $1,500 to replace I can understand the depreciation. The Taycan borders Ferrari cost of ownership. I didn't do my due diligence before buying, I sometimes visit the service dept to get quotes for typical maintenance costs when looking at a particular vehicle. I got sucked into the "no oil changes", engine or transmission to service.
My next EV will involve a lot more research and survey before making a purchase.
A tiny idiotic rock chip has turned into an absolute nightmare.
I took a rock chip coming back from Porsche Palooza '23 - my dealer told me it would be over 11K to repair so I said screw it, I'll live with the star.
A month or two ago, the star spread into a full blown crack. My insurance company has only paid for a fraction of the repair and (so far) has refused to adjudicate the remainder of the claim (which is now 14K!)
My insurance company sucks, but honestly this is straight stupid. There is no planet where it should cost this much to replace a piece of glass.
Meanwhile my car has been in the shop for two weeks and hasn't even been looked at.
The whole thing has me so sour on Taycan in general, my insurance company, and the world.![]()

Maybe I am misrembering, but I thought there was a flurry of posts about glass roofs cracking spontaneously, some soon after delivery. Something about uneven pressure being exerted on the glass from the fit or the installation. And the cost is higher with the adjustable tint glass.well, maybe it is just one rotten/unlucky apple in the proverbial barrel (@DerekS is), and he has taken the time to write about. Statistically insignificant if you ask my opinion (math major here with concentration in statistics)
I visit CA every few years to meet up with friends. The traffic, crazy prices and oh yea, the traffic are reasons enough for me to look forward to leaving. My home state has comparable weather and beaches so CA holds no allure there. I do wish I lived in CA once a year, for ComicCon but, I get over it.I’m in Santa Barbara, CA these last two months… it’s going to be hard to go home in a few weeks. California is a very nice place to be.
But I did park next to a Taycan today… I’m missing my depreciating asset.
The solid roof tends to be structurally weaker than most glass roofs. The actual metal roof is a thin sheet of aluminum, with some soft padding for heat and noise insulation. You do get some support ribs, but no "solid armor" as you'd imagine. When Tesla switched from solid roofs to all glass, they published a bunch of regulatory tests showing the crushing tests of both, with glass being significantly stronger against crushing (took significantly higher pressure to crush the car).As to preference and not statistics, I always have this bias that it seem unwise to add additional glass area voluntarily to car in case of a roll-over. Sure you have to have the greenhouse on 4 sides, but you can choose to skip the glass roof so at least that large side is “armored”.
You could save yourself a lot of time / money by just coming down to Austin as the Californians eventually do. ?I have a lot of reasons. I’ll leave it at that.
what happened? That says nothing about glass roof being covered. This sounds like a real pain....
I hastily checked my insurance small print and found I'm quite clearly covered.

Please stop with this. I'm leaving Texas and I'm never moving back. You could save yourself a lot of time / money by just coming down to Austin as the Californians eventually do. ?
It’s kind of silly how invested people seem to be with where you choose to move to.Please stop with this. I'm leaving Texas and I'm never moving back.
Three weeks now and still waiting on my car...
It's just people trying to derail this thread into a political debate, and I'm not taking the bait. It’s kind of silly how invested people seem to be with where you choose to move to.
