Can I call on the experience of the forum for ceramic coating advice.

Every detailer I've spoken to offers different products - each claiming there's is the latest and best. Many claim gtechniq is outdated and yet their website claims cutting edge - https://www.gtechniqplatinum.com/.

Those who opted for this, what did you choose and why?

Apologies in advance if you knew all of this...

Ceramic coating will provide some minimum form of protection from hard water stains and other contaminates (bird bombs, etc.). They also make cleaning easier by making the surface more slippery, allowing the surface dirt to wash away. Gloss is also significantly improved.

The difference between products is related to application difficulty and lifespan of the coating. I've seen coatings last from a few months to a maybe year. This is obviously dependent on where and how the car is stored and driven. There are many videos on YouTube that have performed long term tests on longevity on the different coatings.

In my opinion ceramic coatings have become a bit of a shady area with detailers really pushing a lot of different products and overstating the benefit. People have reported being told that their coating protects against rocks.

If you're looking for something to increase gloss and help the washing process (and maybe provide a very minor level of protection) than almost any ceramic coating applied by a reputed detailer will do you fine. If you want to fully protect the integrity of the paint then look into a paint protection film. We apply PPF on all of our new cars after having to pay to have a bumper resprayed due rock chips. The PPF was half the cost of the fix.

I have GTECHNIQ HALO on my Taycan and other cars. The reason for HALO is that is designed to work with PPF and the Taycan is full body PPF.

It is fantastic. Keeps the car cleaner longer and makes it a breeze to wash. The water beading is over the top. I use Collinite on my wheels for the same effect: dirt/brake dust doesn't stick well - easy to clean.

No experience of this particular product but I think anything designed for a dealer upsell is probably not the best and will not be applied to anywhere near the standard of an indy detailer who will correct paint before applying etc.
I've had BMWs for the last 35 years and know some of the dealers well. The paint protection they offer has varied over the years from BMW branded hard wax to brand name products. They allow next to no time to apply it and then charge around £500. I've often bought the bmw dealer kit comprising hard wax, glass treatment and carpet/ cloth stain protection on eBay for +/- £20. I only have it applied by the dealer if it is thrown in for free.

I recommend using a good specialist detailer and do some research on products.

butting in here as a fellow Taycan owner and owner of Gtechniq. Think what our competitors are saying is that we've been around the longest :CWL:

Platinum is night and day difference to previous gen paint protection offered by dealerships. Plus its application involves a single stage polish (never heard of in this sector before) as no matter how careful the transport company was or how good the PDI team were, there will always be some level of defects in new vehicle paint.

We are also the only ceramic coating company to have a dedicated team of key account managers who are trained detailers handling any and all warranty claims.

Porsche typically offer this and I've had it 3 times now. Very pleased and long lasting.

2021 Porsche Cayenne Coupe, Taycan GTS on order

I had the GTech platinum applied to my 2021 Cayenne Coupe by Porsche East London when it was new, and I ordered Solid black as I believe it is the best finish when clean…. I have been disappointed by bird poo damaging the paint finish, even if cleaned off straight away (it got crapped on when I was finishing washing it once) and it instantly damaged the paint….

The dealer actually sent a driver 100 mile round trip to collect the car and “rectify” it, which they did but since then it has happened on different areas of the car - the most recent being the bonnet which I actually wet sanded with 3000 grade and machine polished but unfortunately the clear coat is damaged.

Because of this I am considering a good quality wax (Maybe Swissvax) as I don’t believe this coating protects against the elements as well as advertised, and it certainly doesn’t seem to reduce the swirls either.

It’s a shame as I stocked up on 5 litre bottles of shampoo, 5 litres of C2V3, 5 litres of the snow foam and 1 litre bottles of other products which probably cost £400 which I did as it was all “safe” to use with the coating and i feel a bit disappointed. I also believe that the “Platinum” product is nowhere near as good as what an independent detailer would use, yet the cost charged by the dealer is similar - maybe @GtechRob can confirm?

All of this!

PPF to protect your paint. Ceramic coat to make the car easier to wash and stay cleaner longer. I wouldn’t pay big $$ for ceramic coating. Do it at home yourself if you are able. Gtechnic makes good products. I have coated my last 3 vehicles with Crystal serum light topped with EXOv4 and was very happy. You need to take care of the paint, wash it regularly and occasionally top the coating with a spray ceramic coating to maximize longevity but don’t spend $1500+ for water beading….

No ceramic coating, wax, sealant or even ppf prevents bird lime damage.

The advantage you get with ceramic coatings is that it prevents clear coat failure whereas waxes and sealants do not.

Damage from bird lime is, in the main, caused by mechanical damage as when in direct sunlight, the area of paint covered by the bird lime stays cooler than the paint around it. This results in the surrounding paint swelling more than the paint underneath. Repeat this a few times and you will get etching.

Interestingly. This can often be reversed by removing the bird lime and repeatedly (as many as five times) heating the affected area and allowing to cool (a boiling kettle of water or a hair dryer will be sufficient or you could try one of these patches from autoglym https://www.autoglym.com/reflow ). Our findings are that this will work in about 50% of cases.

Bird lime damage is a massive issue in many industries not only automotive paint. We and others in our industry spend a lot of time testing formulas to minimise damage (there is even a synthetic bird lime formula used in these tests).

Having said all this. I have been in this industry now for 18 years and sold hundreds of thousands of ceramic treatments. I have never heard of bird lime instantly damaging clear coat.

Happy to look into your case further - if you want me to do this - please private message me with your car reg and or guarantee number.
