Many people try to get homelink working right after they opened the door and the light is still on.
But it should work whenever you come home and try to open the garage after long time of inactivity.

Sounds like I might as well just keep one of the remotes in the car!
That was my solution.
Homelink didn't respond at all to my remote. I tried twice then I just didn't bother with it ;)

Life is too short.

Universal Receiver is the solution if you have a fairly recent door opener which may be using its own proprietary rolling code. If you know your opener supports UR mode then make sure you choose this option in Homelink before training begins (you may not need to point the remote control at the PCM either - clearly the opener must be in learning mode).
