Hood damage

Hey folks. So just have a quick question. My wife backed into my car and the bike rack on the Jeep caused a significant scrape down to the metal and minor dent(s). Insurance thinks my deductible will cover the damage (1k). Anyone ever have damage like this and what was the cost to fix? Waiting on an appointment with the body shop.

This looks like it's really cutting into the metal. IMHO this is going to be substantially more expensive than you think, assuming it's done right. I'd also be worried that they'll try to just fill and paint over, which might just show months later (that's happened to me, though on the roof, and now I am very very careful to ask EXACTLY how they are fixing it). And it's in a very visible place, so either masterful blending or painting the whole hood.

If you're going through insurance, just get them to replace the hood. Retail is $1,851. Btw, there is only 1 hood in the US. Once that's gone, it will have to come from Germany.

Your in luck, it looks perfectly in line with the hood line! Just put a $5 pin stripe up the hood. It will look cool, and you can tell your wife she did you a favor!

Update: So I went to the one body shop in my state that’s Porsche certified. Luckily it was just 30 min away. He’s thinking hood replacement and painting the entire front end. He can probably fight it out with Progressive since he’s familiar with their shenanigans. Based on their schedule I can probably expect the repair sometime in April which is the same thing I heard from the other shop.

Update: So I went to the one body shop in my state that’s Porsche certified. Luckily it was just 30 min away. He’s thinking hood replacement and painting the entire front end. He can probably fight it out with Progressive since he’s familiar with their shenanigans. Based on their schedule I can probably expect the repair sometime in April which is the same thing I heard from the other shop.

Shoot I can't imagine why the entire front end would need repainting...... I guess it would be to blend the color and finish? But God, to paint the entire front end on a month old $125k Porsche makes the skin on the back of my neck stand up.
I think if it were me I would just have a new hood matched as best as possible, then have PPF the whole front end and take my chances on a pretty good match of the hood to the fenders and bumper. Nothing is as durable and looks as good as factory paint, so I would leave as much intact as possible.
Just my $0.02. Sorry this happened..... this post gave me shivers. My gf won't even drive the car she is so frightened of damaging it..... LOL.

He explained it that way. Matching the hood. The front end is currently wrapped. I’ll see what he included when I get the estimate back. At this point I’m really wishing this had never happened.

I can't imagine painting the entire front end, that borders on ridiculous. I have had a rear bumper cover replaced on my Taycan with about a 1000 miles on it at the time. The paint is a perfect match by a PCCC. Once you respray a painted area, it is detectable with a paint meter. No one will believe the car was not in a front end collision. If only the hood and nothing else is painted, then its evident that the car was not in a collision, rather damaged by something like a road hazard.

Another piece of advice: If it is an insurable claim two things occur. First, your rates go up, second the car has a Carfax accident history and insurance claim history. No way to keep it out if insurance is involved. I opted to pay $2500 to replace my bumper cover out of pocket. No Carfax and no insurance increase. Your whole job is probably about $3K ($1,800 parts & $1,200 paint and labor). If your deductible is $1,000, the cost is really $2,000.

Good points. Painting the whole front end sounded extra but I’ll see what the send over. Really a new hood is what I want. The front end was wrapped within a week of me picking it up so I can’t imagine it will be that much of a difference.

+10 re painting the whole front end as utterly ridiculous - truly amazed that he'd have the nerve to even suggest this to you. As I mentioned before my CF hood I had painted on my M4 a few years back was a perfect match to the rest of the body despite the car already being 2 yrs old at that time - every light angle had the same 'drop' from hood to fenders.

Also on the point of using insurance - I had (also on my M4) a truly minor cosmetic repair where the other party was 100% to blame - long story but it was settled through insurance and sure enough (despite no blame or any level of structural concern) I had to explain this over and again when recently selling the M4 - the way it is written in the CarFax report, whilst still listed as cosmetic, is invariably misinterpreted by potential sellers - right pain TBH.

I think you'll find that painting a bonnet is one of the hardest/most expensive paint jobs to do. I know when I've tried to get it done on other cars, the amount they quoted was multiples more than another panel/panels on the car. I think because of the angle/light it shows a lot if you don't blend it all around and it doesn't quite match.
And it does look rather like you'll need a new bonnet (sorry, hood) as well...

Not my experience here in the US at least (re being most expensive) but certainly would agree that it takes a Pro to get it done right - that really is the key.

The photo here seems to show a cut that goes through the metal like a can opener. If so, I strongly recommend the hood replacement. A good shop will spend too much time ($) to weld this up before paint prep.

Yup. I thought the same re CarMax etc. I initially was not going to involve insurance at all. I’ve only had body work done on one car in my lifetime of owning cars but was thinking hood replacement might be an option so I called them. I’m totally fine with going out of pocket if they can just drop a new hood on. Hopefully, I’ll get the estimate this week.
