if you do not get the PMCC - you will have to purchase an alternate J-1772 charger…there are many many many viable options - and most are way way cheaper than the Porsche option…I would look at this as a gift.

the PMCC is not the best J-1772 charger on the market - but it is by far the most expensive.

if you do not care about a Mobile charger (i.e. one you can have with you while traveling) I would look into ClipperCreek chargers…

the ClipperCreek HCS-50 or HCS-60 is an excellent option for the the Taycan.

later in life if/when you want to have a charger with your in the vehicle while traveling there are great mobile options.

any charger you purchase now, will work for any future EV’s as well, so you should look at this as a one time expensive for both the Taycan and your future EV purchases...

based on extensive experience once you go EV you really don’t want to go back - so don’t look at the Taycan as your last EV - it’s the first of many EV’s you’ll eventually own and enjoy…a good home charging infrastructure is an investment for all your EV’s not just the Taycan.

Thank you, I'll look through it! In the short term, I was going to use the regular garage power plug (120v) - it seems like the Porsche mobile charger does that, which was nice while it was free lol. Any similar chargers you can recommend from your experience? I know it will be slow to charge - this is until I work out a more permanent solution in the garage.

I could have sworn Mobile Charger Connect was a $0 option, now it's showing up as $1,120. If I don't select it, would I have anyway to charge the car?
Count yourself lucky that you have the flexibility now to buy another charger instead: see @daveo4EV ‘s excellent analyses elsewhere on this forum. For our MY2020 Taycans the $1,120 PMCC charger was an obligatory “option”. For the last couple of months with the MY2021 Taycans the PMCC became a $0 option In the configurator. Apparently it now reverted to its old price. The PMCC charger is not bad at all but way overpriced.

You could start with a truly mobile charger like the Mustart which you can afterwards recycle as the charger to keep in your trunk when you have a permanent one in your garage.

Mustart is a great alternative

https://www.mustartsolutions.com/pr...rent-mustart-travelmaster-level2-ev-charger-1

it’s affordable, has multiple plug type adapters - comes iwth the home plug adapter included, and very affordable - and comes iwth the NEMA 5-15 & 14-50 adatper, and you can buy other’s when you’re ready to setup a road warrior kit.

smaller, lighter, and more affordable than the Porsche option - same electrons will charge the battery.

Got it! Just when I got my build under budget, Porsche decides to throw this in lol. Thank you for the quick responses!

$369 for the Mustart charger - very affordable - 32 amps vs. Porsche’s 40 amps (so slower even with a NEMA 14-50 plug) - but 32 amp limit does’t’ matter if you’re only using NEMA 5-15 plug (home outlet)

a great setup is:

Mustart in the frunk for road warrior duty
clippercreek HCS-60 mounted in the garage on a 60 amp hardwired circuit to maximize the Taycan’s charge rate when you’re home.

Unless you use the car for extremely short daily distances, I think you will quickly realize you want something that will charge faster than the standard outlet would give you. Why not work out your permanent solution while you’re waiting for the car and get a real charger? Just my two cents.

IF/WHEN/ONCE I re-open my office, my commute is 30miles RT each day and I can easily charge it 7pm to 8am, so I was going to see how bad it was with the regular outlet, might not be terrible for my use. But you're right, probably makes sense to wire it for a real charger.

EV ownership happiness is _KNOWING_ you have a decent charging infrastructure at home - while you can "get" by with slower charger rates - it means if you ever do need to charge faster you're kinda screwed

no one has ever regretted installing the faster EV charger in your home - it's just a smugness and security thing…

this is a one time expense - and will outlast your current EV - so do it only once, do it well - and then sit back and use it for the next 10-20 years…
