Rear visibility on the Taycan is marginal. Has anyone considered replacing the current rear view mirror with a smart, camera-based model? Not only do such "mirrors" provide unobstructed, wide-angle views but they often feature forward and rear video recording and other smart technologies. Does the existing rear view mirror contain any electronics that are necessary or would be missed?

Wouldn't it be great for an auto-maker to have this as an option in your build - oh well! Bit gimmicky but also a lot of very useful features - many seem to be remarkably cheap but as fussy as we all are with the aesthetics of our rides suspect a lot of folk would prefer a more factory like integration than hanging these onto existing mirrors - example:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GMKM...-487317928.1635975168&tag=shopperz_origin1-20

Probably not for me TBH but I like the tech, the ability to use it as a dash cam and thus removing one other bit of equipment if desired but I'd like it more if it replaced the current mirror vs the typical installation of attaching to an existing factory mirror with all the addl. cable hide issues. The other potential issues might be in respect how they are powered (battery vs hardwiring draw etc). What models were you looking at in case you are referring to a more integrated solution?

Haven’t found that to be an issue. Surround cameras provide enough details to park safely. While driving, mirrors are good enough.

I really wish more cars (especially at this price point) had this option.
I've used JLR's ClearSight a number of times, and it's excellent. A game changer when you have such limited visibility out the back, such as the Taycan.

I have an HD camera rear view mirror in my Bolt. I guess I will have to adjust. Amazing that my options on my Bolt are costing a bundle on my Taycan order ?.

I drove a C8 with an OEM camera "mirror" and was very impressed. I also drove a Genesis GV80 where a camera image of the blindspot and adjacent lane appears in the dash when the turn signal is engaged. Both of these are, in my opinion, superior technologies to what's in the Taycan. I haven't closely investigated what's available aftermarket but would consider supplementing or replacing the Taycan's mirror if it doesn't cause unintended consequences. I'd really appreciate forum members' input.

On my 4S there are sensors in the base of the mirror and on the back of the mirror itself. I'm not certain of the purpose of the one on the mirror but the one in the base is the rain sensor for the intermittent wipe feature. There is also a camera above the mirror which is used for the high beam assist and that may or may not be wired in conjunction with the mirror housing.

I don't know if the "smart" mirror you are considering requires removal of the existing mirror base but I'd suggest making certain of exactly what is wired through that area to avoid unintended consequences. I haven't researched which features and what kind of mirror your base CT has so some of the above may be irrelevant.

"Good enough." Is that the standard Porsche owners ascribe to? Good enough did not give us torque vectoring, rear wheel steering, stability control, advanced accident avoidance, adaptive LED headlights, smart keys, tire pressure monitoring, airbags, GPS navigation, or EVs. Good enough is yesterday's technology. It's complacency and a lack of accountability; a stepping stone on the road to obsolescence. I love the Taycan but not to the point where I won't call out its flaws or acknowledge superior technologies. "Good enough" is not good enough for me.

They call the model S bad but when it comes to Porsche its good enough. in that case the model S is also good enough in the handling depatment. no excuses for any car manufacture or product.

The mirrors will be the same across the Taycan range.

Sensor on the mirror will be the auto dimming feature and the camera also reads road signs and is part of the lane keep assist.

My view is to not fiddle with the standard fitments (warranty, insurance considerations).

IMHO the rear view mirror is fine but the issue is the rear window aperture - small and steeply raked.

this nicely summarizes what are the reasons to get a Porsche (advanced racing tech) and when to avoid it (e.g if the rear visibility is insufficient).
