I was looking for a second TeslaTap80 for our latest Tesla replacement car and came across this.
Porsche Taycan TeslaTap alternatives? 1689841808756

Has anyone tried any TeslaTap alternatives, like this one (which appears to be an almost identical clone)? 80A version for $78 (after the 20% HS20 code) seems very tempting.

$85 on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C2CX97KJ

EDIT: wow, there are a bunch out there, found these 2 on Amazon for $70. The first one

This one appears to have some innovations, like built in lock.

I’d definitely be interested in hearing if any of these alternatives are good options. I just acquired a 2022 Turbo last weekend and would like to get an adapter for back up. The Tesla Taps are definitely way more expensive but I’d hate to go with a “cheaper” version and end up with an unreliable POS.

I wasn’t willing to save a couple hundred bucks to buy a clone made in China. Too many stories of an EV turning into a BBQ from a weak link in the voltage feed.

Bought an original TeslaTap and had a quick question. This USA company picked up the call quickly and the engineer who answered gave me a precise, knowledgeable response.

Yeah, kinda afraid of that too ?

I decided to pick this 80A one up for $70 to test it before I convert my 80A EVSE from Tesla to J1772, see how it compares against a TeslaTap Mini 80A which I already have right now. The reason for a second one is because we just switched out my wife's Tesla with a J1772 car, leaving our garage with two J1772 80A capable vehicles. Adapters will be purely for travel, as I have found my TeslaTap for the Taycan useful on multiple occasions already.

Updating this thread. I picked up this adapter on Amazon to test it.

It works just fine, I tried it out at 80A for a couple of hours on a Q8 eTron (which has the exact same onboard charger as my Taycan). Audi reported 17.2KW which is about the same as my Taycan reports on a native J1772 at 80A. It was 21C outside (70F), the adapter didn't get warmer than the Tesla handle (it actually seemed a little cooler). Confirming with the FLIR after 2 hrs at 80A or so.

I used it few times by now. This is by no means a thorough test, nor a teardown, but just using it a few times right now, not bad at all for $61. I plan to keep it for travel charging with the eTron.

PS> Didn't try on the Taycan as my Taycan didn't need long charging sessions recently.

Quick update to this thread. I've been using the above adapter regularly for a month now, works great, no complaints.

Another quick update, due to our garage being used for some other purposes over the last new months, this adapter has seen a lot of 80A charging sessions on the driveway. No problems whatsoever so far. Picked up another identical one to keep in the Audi so we can keep on in the garage permanently. $30 (Amazon link), have been using it last 3 weeks or so at 80A, all good.

Yea, at that price I decided to pick up one more, to keep a spare during road trips. On a couple of occasions so far I ended up in a situation where I was charging the Taycan at a Tesla-only destination charger in a hotel, and there was another car with J1772 which did not have an adapter on them (owners did not even know it existed until I told them). If I had a spare I could have lent it to them, now I will be able to.

Quick update on this. I have been using this adapter for a year and half now, charging an eTron with 19.2KW charger daily at 80A. No problems. A while back (Feb 23) I realized after inspecting it few months in, that there was some water incursion due to sometimes charging outside in a rain.

There was no gasket there, like there is on the J1772 side. TeslaTap doesn't have one on the J1772 side either. So, I added one, by simply putting an o-ring gasket around the NACS handle like this (shown before I pushed it into the socket).

Working well to-date, I inspected it recently (so 9 months later) and it worked well, no signs water incursion even after many rainy charging sessions. Still charging daily at 80A (19.2KW) without any issues.

SUV - 2024 Audi Q8 eTron, with 80A/19.2KW charger option. A few handfuls of sessions with the Taycan too (also with 80A/19.2KW option). EVSE is 80A capable (Tesla HPWC Gen2).
