Hi,

Has anybody attached a Type 2 extension cable to a PMCC ?

The reason for asking is my current charger is outside and on occasion I have the opportunity to put the Taycan in the garage, therefore I am considering installing the PMCC in the garage and using a type 2 extension to allow me to charge on the drive and if in the garage I will use the main cable.

I don’t have any spare circuits on my consumer unit to have two chargers wired and working.

I welcome the forums feedback…..

I am using something similar from Amazon with no issues.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HRHYQY2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

edit: beware the one you posted is only rated for 32 amp (7 KW), you want one that can do 40 amp (9 KW charging) assuming you have the Porsche charger or a 40a capable EVSE.
The charger outside is on a 32amp circuit, I plan to reuse that in the garage which was why I had only gone for a 32amp extension, I expect there is no harm is having a higher rated cable, in might even be a little safer.

there is no safety issue then, choose whichever cable suits your functional and aesthetic requirements.

...or you could install a mini supply board adjacent to your existing one and have another 32A circuit (not an additional supply). Not as cheap as the extension cable however and may cost between £350 and £500 fitted.

Also check the PMCC manual in case there is a restriction on the max cable length (7.5m (25ft) potentially).

Sorry for not being more precise, I am looking at a cable such as this:

https://www.4ev.co.uk/type-2-5m-extension-cable

It extends the type 2 cable of the PMCC.
Hi Carl,
You'll find that it's not possible to use an extension lead such as the one in this link beween the PMCC and your car. The male end of the extension lead is designed to plug into a female port in an unthethered charging point (one with no cable attached). When you plug the male end of the extension cable into the female plug on the end of the cable from your PMCC, you'll find that the pins aren't long enough. See the lower plug on the image attached. I believe the plugs are designed like this to stop you doing what you are proposing.
So whatever you do the PMCC needs to be plugged directly into the car - perhaps you can extend the 40 Amp supply somehow?

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the feedback, I am a little confused as the website does say it can only be used to extend a type two cable but what you stated does make sense and I considered the different socket sizes.

My “plan b” is to install a twin commando socket and have both chargers connected, I would only be able to use one at a time, but as I only have one EV then that should be ok.
