Linux isn't usable for lots of things, if for no other reason, the GPL. Infotainment will be probably use linux derived stuff like the android open source kernel or just QNX.i hope this is just lost in translation by the journalist talking to a business guy. Building your own OS is stupid. Even Tesla doesn’t do this. Samsung has tried for years and it’s awful. And they’re a tech company! Build a platform on top of Linux. “It’s fine”
Deeply embedded applications have been using custom OSs or operating environments forever. Lots of euro cars probably are running a hard RTOS that is built around OSEK. There's many different RTOS that are domain specific for what sort of thing they are controlling. Car companies are starting with any of the commercial kernels and then developing the relevant bits as necessary.
That mirrors just about any other deeply embedded or industrial application where the IP matters. If companies are following the Automotive SPICE process, that adds all sorts of process things that you'd want to control in your software dev efforts.
