Windshield Replacement - Astonished at the Price Charged -- $3,358!!

Needed a new windshield as the rock that hit it won that round.

All in the price to repair, recalibrate and replace at a dealer was $3,358. What I thought was a bit excessive was the $1,200 to recalibrate the front camera. Its all done by PIWIS and probably didn't take longer than an hour.

My insurance company uses Safelight as do many others. Safelight won't touch the Taycan. The dealer has their own subcontractor and they do the rest. The sub was fair at $550.

The first call I am going to make is to my insurance agent to determine if I can obtain full glass coverage and at what price. This episode cost me $500 out of pocket.

I had one of first Taycan's in July 2020. The windscreen was smashed within 24hr of collection on the highway. The replacement was less than 200 GBP plus camera calibraiton. The technican told me it was no different than any other VW windscreen. Cost me £75GBP on the insurance.

Something must have drastically changed since then. I first called the parts dept of the dealer to get a price on the part. He quoted me what I stated above.

I got an original OEM windscreen as there was only one option at the time. You would think there would be more manufacturers now. $1000+ is crazy.

Related: my RWD needed a windshield when I traded it in. Lots of pockmarks, which is consistent with every Porsche I've ever owned.

For the GTS I had them apply exterior windshield protection film in the hopes of having a tear-off sacrificial layer.

It's only been 48 hours - so far it's very wavy and the distortion is bugging me, but hoping that will pass as it dries and settles in.

I will report back with my experience.
