I was at the Porsche Museum at Zuffenhausen today where they have a cutaway rear Taycan motor that I thought folks would be interested to see. Unfortunately it was in a display case with lighting pointing directly at it – so it was very reflective.

They also had a battery cell in the display.

That motor looks very big compared to more modern motors. And the gearbox also? Wonder if the new Macan will have smaller units?

Did you do the Taycan factory tour while you were in Zuffenhausen? I did that last week. I thought it was very interesting. Far tidier than the Fremont Tesla factory … but many, many more people than the Oxford Mini factory. Porsche tell you they are proud of how much is done by hand because it adds soul; but it also adds price!!

Perhaps the most interesting message they were giving is that they very deliberately chose Zuffenhausen for the Taycan because it is where the 911s are made - it is where their heart is - it is where vehicles meant for sporty driving are built. And they see Taycan as their electric sport future. By contrast for example with the Macan which doesn’t belong in Zuffenhausen.

I have to admire the simplicity of it all. I get the appeal of a screaming V8 revving up to 9000 RPM (certainly I've had one) but to see how many fewer moving parts and presumably so much less buildup, gunk, grime, burnt oil, etc. Dunno how I could ever go backwards...

Thank you for your excellent photos under less than ideal conditions! Here are translations of some of the labels. I am not an engineer so an engineer could give more idiomatic translations and explanations:
Stator.
Rotor.
Resolver, to measure angles of rotation.
Leistungselektronik, power electronics.
AC-Stromschienen, busbars to conduct AC electric current(?).
Schaltwalze, shift drum.
Hubmagnet, lifting magnet.
Ausrückhebel, release lever.
Lamellenkupplung, multiplate clutch.
Klaue, claw.

I was there last Thursday and also did the Taycan tour. Very impressive.

PS: Love the colour of the Taycan CT in the museum ;)

the motor itself was already dissected and compared to Plaid and Lucid in a video that was already shared in
The Lucid motor is so efficient and powerful that I wonder why Porsche didn't put the effort to develop something similar.

The Lucid motor is so efficient and powerful that I wonder why Porsche didn't put the effort to develop something similar.
The Taycan motor is an offshoot of the motor used in the 919 hybrid racer where full performance for extended periods was more important, ie not overheating when used near max power almost continuously.
The Lucid design is very interesting and super efficient and designed around a more typical road car duty cycle requirement which requires full power very infrequently and even then for a few seconds at a time at most..

I can see the Lucid approach makes more sense for a road car.
