Budget EV charger for the home - recommendations?

Hi, can anyone recommend a budget EV charger for the home? Doesn’t have to be super expensive as we’re renting.

Any brand will do as they all do precisely the same thing.

Note that these wall boxes (EVSEs) aren't chargers (charger is internal to the car) and simply supply a safe flow of electricity to the car. The car controls the charging and not the wall box.

All charging control will be via My Porsche app unless you choose either Octopus or Ovo as your electricity provider and use their app instead.

Set your budget and get an EVSE rhat can support 7.4kW or more.

I just got myself the EVIQO gen 2 (which is now on discount on amazon for about $420). It seems quite nice and it was easy to install. I used to use the J+ booster which is excellent but continuously charging two EV's from a mobile charger like that is a bit much so I just upgraded to the EVIQO -- the cable on this one is also 25ft but it uses slightly thicker gauge (2x 9awg instead of 10awg for the J+ booster). It was easy to install and seems quite robust ... fingers crossed :)

OP is UK - their choices for an EV charger (EVSE) are different than North America - what's wrong with the included EV charger that comes with the car?

It’s overpriced, imo.
I don’t know for UK/USA, but i had to buy it separatelly 🤷‍♂️
Four years ag, the price was about 1500eur, today is 1738…

ahhh yes if it's not "free/included" I agree the Porsche unit is pricey…and in North America one of the most expensive and crappy EVSE's on the market.

I'm unfamiliar with the UK EVSE landscape - so I'll have to let other's make recommendations - if you were in North American lots of affordable choices!!!

Late to the discussion, but here’s my experience in case it helps.

If you’re charging a Taycan (or any EV with an 11 kW onboard charger), hardwiring an 11.5 kW (48A) unit is the most efficient setup, fewer failure points than a plug and socket.

However, for a budget home install, the biggest obstacle isn’t the charger itself, it’s your panel capacity. I ran into a service bottleneck and had to add load management to comply with the NEC 80% continuous load rule. That added cost.

A few budget‑friendly tips:

If your run is under 50 feet, 6 AWG THHN in conduit is fine (minimizes heat). For longer runs, you might need heavier gauge, that’s where costs jump.

Look for chargers with built‑in load management (like the Grizzl-E or Wallbox) to avoid a panel upgrade.

If you do need electrical work, find a firm that handles their own engineering, I used Wolf River Electric for my panel reconfiguration, and it saved me from hiring a separate designer.

Only a year late to the party (!) and OP is UK based so they can't do what you suggest.

They will / would have needed a 32A fused run from the main fusebox, a 32A receptacle, a 32A receptacle to EVSE tail and a 32A EVSE to car cable to get 7.4lW.
