The other big problem with Ionity is, so often, they are only kicking out 100kw instead of 350
Leeds and Cullompton are always <100 in my experience
Interesting how different people's experiences are. I believe you, but I generally have nothing but great experiences at IONITY, in Belgium, France, Germany, and the UK. The only bad one I've had is Cobham on the M25, and even then that was only during the day where I got less than 100 kW. At night when it was quiet I got 265 kW, just like I get every other IONITY I've used both in the UK and on the continent.

18 bay upgrade in plan for Cobham - link to planning app 2023/1603

A couple of interesting things to note about the expansion:

1. Ionity are installing a mix of
  • their usual ABB charge posts/cabinets, but also
  • Alpitronic HYC400 units, which are a 400 kW output, dual-head monolithic cabinet design. I think this might be the first for a UK install
2. There are three expanded charging areas in the application:
  • Charging Area - 1 (8 bays: 8 x ABB charge points)
  • Charging Area - 2 (8 bays: 2 x ABB charge points + 3 x Alpitronic HYC400)
  • Large EVs Charging Bay (2 bays: 2 x ABB charge points) - these bays are 9.6m long
3. There are 2 new IDNO substations in plan, a Low Voltage panel area and space for 12 x ABB cabinets for their charge posts.

4. The planning app is titled "Installation of No.15 charging points, substations, LV panels, electric vehicle parking spaces, power cabinets and bollards"....but three of those fifteen (the Alpi's) are designed to serve two vehicles, so in essence there are actually 18. Shhh don't tell anyone 😅

Seems like dual 200KW or 400KW for a truck, which would tie in with the larger bays

Actually true, with the state of our economy post Brexit;
… there is no one actually doing the digging …. Everyone is a manager … and a few extra Conservative ministers are added to the picture, who are also looking at the the whole scene from the sides.

What a mess !

Interestingly the larger bays are fitted with the original ABB pillar type charge points and the Alpi's are on some of the regular bays.

Ionity recently announced that Alpitronic would join them as a strategic partner. Not necessarily to displace ABB, but I'd imagine that hasn't always been the smoothest of partnerships.

By the way Nio cars can use the 400 kW capability of these units, charging up to 320 kW, beating the Taycan at peak rate. They even have their own range of 500 kW charge points domestically.

The longer bays are for BEVs towing trailers, caravans and the like, without unhitching. These types of bays are more prevalent on the continent, at Fastned sites.

Edited your post...

Thanks for the great info! Looks like the deadline for the decision is 7th September, which is a bit disappointing as I'd heard they would be installed this year, and I can't see how that can happen if it's not approved until September. On the plus side, I didn't expect 18 new chargers.

As for the longer bays...is this going to be another source of EV rage when a trailer-less car uses one of these bays? :whew:

Only three Ionity sites in Scotland. Two Glasgow and one Perth. None in Edinburgh which makes no sense. Although in EV charging world makes lots of sense.

It's interesting that both Alpitronic and ABB build their hardware in northern Italy – which is turning into a bit of a specialist region for high-power charging manufacturing.

Common enough at Tesla sites in Norway – helpful for Taycan's with the DC charging port on "the wrong side":
