Some owners of Taycans with 19.2kw on-board AC charger seem to have had issues with DC charging, or other problems, that they believed are related to 19.2kw charger. Have you seen any of those issues with your car?

I don’t use any DC charging stations.

The 2021 19.2kW AC chargers had issues with plug and charge and one particular type of EA DC charging station. Neither issue would be related to my problem though.

If it's based on open evse, that's great, he can probably service it after it's gone out of warranty. I got an open evse so I can service it as necessary.

I’m assuming it’s covered under warranty for now, but I already thought about redoing the electronics if it ever came to it and just reusing the housing, contactor, and cables. I’d add a web server for remote monitoring and data logging.

Nothing user serviceable, but it’ll be interesting to hear how they troubleshoot and service your situation

I’m guessing that since it doesn’t turn on and I’m not allowed to open it, I’ll just have to pack it up and ship it back. I would guess they’ll just repair it and send it back to me. But I’m just speculating for now.

Maybe you can finagle an upgrade to the Wattzilla Uno for the full 80A…

They already told me that the cables are the same size they use in their 80A units. I’d be willing to bet the contactor is too then. If that’s the case and I end up redoing the electronics someday, then I may just go ahead and make it 80A anyway. ?

EVSE's die/break/burnout/fail - that's why I recommend everyone have a "backup" NEMA 14-50 or 14-30 so they can use the Mobile charger that came with the car while they wait for a new/warranty-replacement EVSE should there be problems.

The manufacturer already got back to me. Ship it back and it gets turned around in 24 hours.

Usually around 17kW at the car. It will vary between 16.8 and 17.2.

I picked it up for $1200 at the beginning of the year. Anything else at 80A was closer to $2k at the time. I couldn’t justify almost double the cost for 5 more amps, so that’s how I ended up here. The same unit is more expensive now ($1500) so I would probably get the Porsche 19.2kW EVSE if I was re-doing it today.

I got the unit shipped out today. It was actually pretty difficult to get the wires pulled out of the conduit. I don’t think I’m going to be able to pull them back through with a fish tape. Maybe. I’ll try that fist, but I think I’m going to have to cut all of the drywall back out to reinstall. ?

$60 to ship ground.

I started thinking more about all of the modifications I want to make if I have to repair myself. Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll decide not to warranty it. ?

If you can find a gen1 or 2 Tesla HPWC it will work on the Taycan with an adapter up to 80A. This is still the cheaptest solution.

Those would typically be 2nd hand though, right? Meaning no 30% tax credit. Plus the need to purchase an 80A Tesla Tap.

Porsche wall charger would be $1110 with the credit.

I didn’t look extensively, but it appears Tesla Gen 2 HPWC is around $800 used plus a Tesla Tap @ $250 puts you around $1050. Plus the cable is only 8.5’ (probably okay for me actually; not sure for others). And I’m not sure what the warranty situation would be on the used equipment vs new either.

I do recall someone recently buying or at least looking at one of these on eBay or something and I think it said it was still new/unopened. That would still qualify. I don’t remember the price, but assuming it’s still around $800, that’s $810 with credit and tap.

I think the Porsche Wall Charger is the best plan for anyone looking for a basic 19.2kW EVSE right now (unless they want load sharing or something).

Porsche Wall Charger for the win! I wouldn’t mess with used Tesla Wall Chargers - I love mine - but new w/warranty counts for a A LOT - and you never know how well treated used stuff from eBay has been during it’s lifetime.

Fair — I forgot about the tesla tap. I already had several Tesla HPWCs when I purchased my Taycan, so for me the TeslaTap was by the the best option.

At our second home I recently installed a Clipper Creek with two heads. It was expensive, but their build quality is second to none.
