Oh, it is for sure working in the background at night – without needing any activation. I've had it pop up when it detected deer on a dark road for me.

The left tube shows up red with a icon of an animal and a warning: Collision Warning. You get a alarm sound and the centre "tube" shows the infa-red image with red box around the animal detected. All without having to manually configure anything.
Man I wish I had "night vision" optioned after reading this...

Same here. I with there was a "enable night vision in the center tube only when object detection is enabled" option. I keep it on 100% of the time because I don't want to have to remember to turn it on each time I think it's dark enough for the object detection to work.
A good thing with nightvision is that it works also when its display is not chosen. The alerts are not quite as informative then, but they do come.

Edit: sorry about repeating comment from others, I was too quick on the trigger when catching up reading this thread!

ciaranob, thanks for the write up. I generally follow a similar path. A couple of exceptions:

Right Diamond:
Sound on/off. I use the sound in parking lots to alert pedestrians then turn it off.

Multi-display: This had been my most used as my car has Burmester audio. The multi-display (until a couple of weeks ago) had the Bermester audio controls as a panel in the multi-display.

But something happened a couple of weeks and and Burmester audio is no longer available on the multi-display.

Anyone else have Bermester and this experience?

Not a new thread theme but thought that after driving this car for 1.5 years I'd share my most useful day-to-day screen layouts - including Diamond button assignations. My car does have HUD and the Passenger Screen which influence my layout. I also have a separate HomeLink solution so despite it working in the car I don't actually need it (only relevant as I previously had a Diamond button assigned to HomeLink).

Might be useful to newer owners looking for an optimal and efficient layout of the multiple info streams your car can provide.

On cross country/State trips I am always (to date) with my wife who can avail of the Passenger Screen to modify/update any planned routes using the full PCM navigation map whereas in my primary layout I only use the dash map view (traffic congestion, road works etc) and occasionally might toggle to Apple Maps via CarPlay. Waze is always on with CarPlay and feeds info from the background.

Of course all of this a very personal thing but curious what other 'long term owners' find most efficient:

What is a HUD, please? No idea what those initials mean. I do have a passenger screen.

What is a HUD?
‘Head-Up Display’. Holographic protection that ‘floats’ over your front bonnet that can show a variety of info like Nav directions, speed, speed signs, etc etc. Optioned in Tech Pkg.

Curious about "holographic" in this context. I have thought about the HUD as a rather simple reflection that would not fall into the holographic category. But I obviously could be wrong here?

No you’re right - getting ahead of myself :) - they are coming I.e. they exist and increasingly will be use in AR applications but yes the majority if current HUDs are optical projections vs true holographic projections largely due to cost and size etc. Have not actually confirmed what the latest tech Porsche uses which would be interesting to determine. All said the application concept re HUD essentially the same.

and of course Porsche as others deep into researching holographic HUDs

Interesting! But things obviously don't happen quickly, as the investment in WayRay was in 2018. I wouldn't expect in Taycan.2 then.
And just to be clear the HUD system in the Taycan works perfectly well w/o holographic AR capability :).

I personally have had it in my last 3 cars and find if indispensable - most neg comments I’ve seen are invariably from folk who’ve never actually used one! I’m to the point that I hate not having it in any rental I’d use on vacation/business!

I like the customized ashtray cupholder insert for a mag charger. Purchased, or you made it? Great idea.
