OTA Software Update (July 17, 2023)!

The problem in the MY20 models is the On-Board-Charger (OBC) hardware. It doesn't have the ability to store and use the required certificates. This was introduced in the MY21 version of the OBCs (11kW and 22kW).

The only way to support Plug & Charge is to retrofit the 22kW OBC.

If that works, and if they only swap the OBC itself, then that pretty much confirms my thought that the authentication and attestation (as well as storing and managing the cert etc.) is mostly contained in a charging-related module (the OBC itself apparently).

Or it means that the first year charging module can’t talk to the car’s authn/z module. ?

That is true, but the original conjecture was that MY2020 would not support Plug & Charge *and* OTA, because it was missing the auth module or similar.

Right, and I haven’t yet seen the evidence that this is not the case. With all due respect to @AndiL and his extensive experience in the charging software of the car, we don’t yet know how it works inside (as in the security architecture of the Taycan). If you’re curious/bored, we speculated at length on this about half a year ago, on a thread related to replacing batteries - specifically on the need for integrity, how that would be implemented, challenges etc. (again, it’s all speculation; it makes sense to me, but I accept the likely possibility that it’s much simpler in reality. I’m not trying to win an argument, just find this type of speculation more interesting/appealing to me as a forum topic.)

Plug & Charge uses a contract certificate from your mobility provider, which mostly is the Porsche Charging contract for Taycan owners, but also could be any other. Plug & charge saves a swipe, but you’re tied to only 1 (and often the most expensive) provider.
I’m always checking different apps to decide what card to swipe. Can save sometimes up to 50%
Got 7 different providers now, all offering the same charging points, but all at different rates.

I've used Plug & Charge with my Taycan, but only at EA sites. Does Plug & Charge in my Taycan work for US charging networks other than EA?
For example, is there some other US charging network I can subscribe to and then charge my Taycan by just plugging in without using phone & app?
How about for Taycans in Europe?

Or, does Plug & Charge in Taycan mean it works only for charging providers enrolled in "Porsche Charging Service"?

@Tooney The charging station has to support it. In Europe multiple charging networks support Plug & Charge, e.g. Ionity, Aral, BP, and more. I can't say anything about the US though.

Plug & Charge is not bound to a specific charging service provider, anyone can adopt and support it as it is part of the international ISO15118 charging standard.

Other EV vendors, at least in Europe, support it as well: Mercedes, BMW, Ford, VW and more.

So in Europe, in a Taycan you can use Plug and Charge at Ionity, Aral, BP, etc?
If so, in a Taycan in Europe to use Plug and Charge do you need to set up separate accounts with each provider, or does being enrolled in Porsche Charging Service cover all those Plug & Charge providers?

I am trying to figure out if having Plug and Charge in a Taycan means Plug and Charge at Porsche charging service providers only, or it means Plug and Charge at any charging provider that supports Plug and Charge (including networks not part of Porsche charging service).

Plug & Charge is a feature of a mobility service provider like Porsche Charging Services. So if I charge in Europe at a charing station that also support Plug & Charge (Ionity, Aral, BP, ...) and I do not use another charging provider RFID or app before plugging in, I will be billed with whatever Porsche Charging Services costs at that location.

I should (!!) be able to get another charging contract from another vendor that supports Plug & Charge and use that instead of Porsche Charging Services. I say should, because I haven't tested this. If Porsche implemented it properly, it should also work with others just fine.
