I see many post here about the PCM? I'm slightly confused... Dare I say I like it and I've not (yet) had any issues? I don't see why it gets so much hate?

I came from a 2021 RS6 and the dash and displays are comparable if not better. I quite like the UI and the dash and HUD are highly customisable. More so than the RS6.

I will however concede that my 360 camera on the RS6 was much better.

People in the market for a 250.000 EV will not compare it to an ICE audi worth half that amount.

They will compare it to other EVs: tesla, rivian, hyundai, bmw, polestar, lucid, mustang and any other EV - which all have better software; and in the case of lucid, rivian just as good or better features and driving dynamics according the most press.

And that's before chinese cars are even considered, which come with insane luxury interiors, features, most advanced batteiries on the market at 1/4th of the cost.

And again, most people in the market for a new car are people that were born with a smartphone in hand or got it soon after. They do value software.

It's not that bad currently (IMO). The point being made is that there are some potentially useful updates in the J1.2 that aren't being made available to j1 - a good example being the silly charge timer/profile schema. There are also low hanging fruit improvements to the system that they should really be making.

Audi are not a good comparator. They are part of the same group and have been very far from paragon of virtue in this space for a couple of decades.

Back then they were one of only a few who could make bruiser estate cars. But that restriction lifts/alleviates with EVs.

They have one more generation max, IMO, before the new kids on the block catch up on their traditional territory. If they are behind in software at that point, they will be in trouble.

Errrm an RS6 is £130k same as a J1.2 ST Turbo.... Very comparable indeed I'd say.

Well comparable in most ways - just not residual; the RS6 has some. ?

Kind of surprised about these J1.2 -> J1 software updates discussions. The J1.2 system is still extremely slow and feels like an OS from the early 2010s. It would be nice to have some updates in J1 cars for sure, but they are mostly minor. What is really annoying is that VW already has their new Android-based software, which will be available in Macan, Audi Q6 E-Tron, and the upcoming Cayenne EV. Now, every J1.2 owner who is about to get their car will receive a "legacy" PCM. As a result, the Taycan (Porsche's leading EV) will receive truly updated software only in the next generation. (and all related features like new cameras, augmented reality head-up display, etc.)

When the software is so shit, every little upgrade matters. And if they refuse to do even that... then yea, my next one won't be porsche

Forgive me, but why are we comparing apple and oranges?

People in the market for an EV will never look at a 911
People in the market for a 911 hate EVs.

People that can afford to own and buy a 911 are around 50 on average.
People looking at buying EVs were born with an iphone in their hand.

You think the Taycan and Porsche EV is competing with 911? That must be a joke...
The reason for Taycan's existence is because Tesla, not because 911.

You are comparing a Nokia 3310 to a Iphone 15 pro max. People looking at Nokia 3310 are around 80-90 year old, people looking at iphone 15pro are slightly younger.

Expectations from an EV are vastly different than from a ICE car

Probably not even worth a thread on an 911 forum.
My point exactly.....

Think you've missed the point.... I bought my Taycan because of its resemblance to a 911 interior - have you sat in a 992? Its all very familiar.

In a few years if all cars are electric even the fabled 911 will be electric. At which point purists wont be buying cars with 'fart buttons' and no clocks behind the wheel.

Oh and final point... I have a taycan now but my next car will likely be a 911 ICE and i dont hate EV's??!?!?. Maybe im old (mid thirties).

As i say from one 100k car to another im pretty happy with the PCM (even without the fart button).

What does an EV have to do with the OS of a car? Could be we have different motives for buying the Taycan. I did not even look at the PCM when buying the car. If I remember correctly I test drove a car without uPdate which looked like the windows 95 era, and can’t even remember it. EV != tech, EV is an alternative for ICE.

I literally just did this. We own a Rivian R1S and I cross-shopped a Lucid with the Taycan. It came down to the driving dynamics (the Lucid drove well but it felt "solid" like the Rivian, not "sporty" like the Taycan) vs the software. I decided I could live with the Taycan's software in exchange for the dynamics, but I went into my test drive pretty skeptical.

Lol, did you come here straight from RennList?

It’s ok, you don’t have to understand the typical Porsche buyer to be one. And, for fuck’s sake, the Taycan brought a lot of those into the fold. Judging by these threads, they won’t make that mistake again.

I don’t mind the software, I mostly use car play, I do wish route planning was a little faster, and smarter. I also wish homelink worked when the car was off. Finally I wish the ui had comprehensive cell and battery data shared in details.

The crashes have long since stopped on mine.

It is a little bit of a bummer if they don’t update it the software on the pre facelift but not sure that would sway a future purchase for me.

For me it all comes down to battery life and safety, I am growing a little worried that older battery’s of current tech will be a safety risk which isn’t seen.
