The Porsche Taycan's EPA Range Jumped Up Significantly for Model Year 2025

Taycan Range (from porsche.com)

Top speed. Even when at a standstill.
In terms of charging time and range, the new all-electric Taycan models also demonstrate their Porsche genes. Because we believe that a sports car should be ready to set off at all times, we do our utmost to facilitate simple charging that is integrated into everyday life. Because the only thing you should think about is where to go next.

Range estimates based on standardized EPA testing may be found on the new vehicle window sticker (Monroney label) and on https://www.fueleconomy.gov/.

Please make sure the range is adequate for your daily driving needs prior to finalizing your purchase.

So refresh my memory. What were the EPA estimates for the V1 Taycan? As I recall, they were a bit low and we’ve all experienced better mileage, but I don’t have the details at hand.

Seems like they’re in true Porsche fashion sandbagging the EPA numbers again. 261 miles/420 km on the Turbo S Cross Turismo is far lower than what I’m getting. It assumes that you‘re using about 23 kWh/100km which is albeit not impossible, but very high.

Taycan Turbo CT here, charged to 100% couple of days ago for a trip, range shown in my car 230miles/370km, which is the most I've seen in a while (maybe ever). This is in the middle of very warm summer weather, so ideal weather conditions, though my summer wheels are 21", so a slight range hit there. Your range depends on how you drive the car, from fast/aggressive to slow/calm hypermiling. It also depends on length of your trips (short trips use more energy) EPA just tells you some number in between, perhaps a median or average range. Maybe majority of people who purchase a Turbo/S choose to unleash the additional performance they paid for in their daily driving and/or do a lot of short trips.

Are we really talking about the same thing, though? The MY25 has much better efficiency than the previous version. With my MY22, I typically saw numbers close to what you’re mentioning for steady road trips, but the MY25 is in a different league. You would need to push it really hard to get an average of 23 kWh/100km.

Again, it’s not impossible to get these numbers, but I have a hard time seeing how this would be representative of typical driving, especially for comparison between models and brands, which I would argue is the primary purpose of the rating. Yeah, one can use the throttle as an on/off switch, but I don’t see how that would give a usable number for comparison.

You said Porsche is sandbagging EPA numbers again, implying they did it for the gen1 too. I was just pointing out that my Gen1 Taycan gets approximately rated numbers in good conditions (rated 233 miles on 20" wheels, I got 230 miles in summer with 21" wheels).

Smaller width wheels (maybe more efficient tires), bigger battery.....of course you'd get more range. I'd be more interested in kWh per 100(insert your unit here). 23kwh/100km works out to about 2.7kwh/100miles, which is what I probably average throughout the year. 3ish during summer and as low as 2.5-2.6 during California "winter" on .1 Mission Es with max summer tires.

At first I thought that was a nice looking rear end on the 2025 in the article, but they used a .1 Taycan :p

So the official EPA 2025 ratings now pretty much match the actual 70mph range of the prior model years:
https://insideevs.com/reviews/443791/ev-range-test-results/
... which means that -- umm, err, ahh, anyone?
Actually, yes, we do have that one report from @groatzky (thanks!) which implies that the EPA rating is once again a significant underestimate of the actual roadtripping range.
(Which is good! Unless you're worried it will lower your pre-2025 resale value. And unless you have major FOMO on longer range.)

Bigger battery with the same range = lower efficiency. This info is a head scratcher for sure.

When it comes to EV range, the same company can subject the same vehicle to two controlled (but different) "general purpose" test regimes and get very different answers. Porsche's EPA estimate for the base model with the big battery is 318 miles, while its WLTP estimate is about 370 miles (midpoint between 503-678 km). Same for the other trims. Actual range seems to be sensitive to too many different factors to quantify reliably.

So at the end of the day I don't know how much predictive power these numbers have for anybody. Except perhaps if you are exceeding (or falling short of) a particular test number by a certain amount, maybe multiplying another model's test number by that same ratio might get you in the right ballpark.
