A little off-piste...

I want to take my private reg off my A7 - and retain in readiness for adding to Taycan. This means putting a normal reg on the A7. The A7 was originally registered by Audi Dealer with the private reg - was never registered with a normal reg.

DVLA site says I will get a code immediately to allow transfer of private reg to Taycan (great) - but does not offer advice on any immediate mechanism for putting the normal reg on the A7 - and say the official docs could take 4-6 weeks to arrive.

Halfords say they will only make up a number plate with the official docs. This would mean no A7 to drive for 4-6 weeks until docs arrive.

That can't be correct? What am I missing? I can't find a contact (phone/email) to ask DVLA.

I don't want to trigger removal of the plates from my A7 until I know the route forward...

any help appreciated - thanks

When you apply for the number plate to be taken off your A7 the DVLA will automatically give you the registration the car was first registered against. In your case if the car was registered from new by the dealership with your private plate then you won't have a year related number plate assigned to the vehicle at that time, so in this case the DVLA will generate a new age specific one for the car to be registered against.

Also as soon as you apply to take the private plate off, the DVLA will issue you with an electronic eV948 form which is a number plate authorisation certificate that you can use to get the new plates made up within 3 days of being issued.

Also remeber to update your insurance for the new registration for the A7, MOT don't change any more as they are just linked to the new registration online, but you'll get a replacement V5 for the car in the post, usually in about 5 working days. You'll also get the retention certificate for the private plate too, but as you said you get the code so you can immediate put it on another car if required.

When you remove your plate from the donor car DVLA issue a standard reg for the donor car and a retention certificate for the plate to go onto the next car - the email they send you is sufficient to get number plates nade up - I did it yesterday

Thanks XK - sorry to be thick....

I understand about the certificate for transferring the private reg - DVLA web site says its a code - but a certificate is even better - great! That is understood.

But, when you say they 'issue a standard reg' for the donor car - is that some kind of document I can download and print to show Halfords or whomever?

Its the making of the standard reg I have concerns over - not the transfer to the Taycan - that could be months away.

thanks again

Hi Guys - Thanks for the advice on how to put a cherished plate on the Taycan - much appreciated.....

But that is not really my question.....

I am privately selling my A7 which has a cherished plate on it now (that will go to the Taycan eventually).

What I need to know is what does DVLA give you, when you remove a cherished plate, to allow a standard reg plate to be made up for the DONOR car - not the Taycan.

Halfords say they need an official document - is that emailed to me when I take the cherished plate off the donor car?

thanks again

All posters above are correct - when I did mine yesterday DVLA sent me a PDF of the V948 which is sufficient to get the date related plate made up

I did exactly the same thing for my car.

My advice is :

1. Do a retention document and take the private plate from your car. This is instant online and they will allocate you the old plate.
2. As this is instant, you need to check if your insurance will charge for a change of plate. Remember parking permits and on the just park app etc too!
3. Put the new plates on the car that were on the car when you bought it or have them made before you do the above!
4. When you get the new porsche let the dealer allocate you a new number plate and also ask them to put the new plates On the car, they normally will cut you some new plates with your new reg anyway. This is important for when you sell the car!
5. Go home and register with DVLA
6. swap the plates / insurance / parking permit etc
7. Keep the new allocated plates somewhere for when you sell it this will save you buying new plates!

Can I suggest 2 things?
1. Use these guys. Really good service and no need for any documentation to make up the plates: Plates for cars https://www.platesforcars.co.uk/
2. Get your new Taycan registered by the OPC with a standard plate. Transfer your personal plate onto it after you collect. Then when you sell the Taycan you will get re-allocated the number plate it started with and you will have the plates sitting in your garage, holes in the correct place and ready to put on

Thanks Ian - was thinking of allowing Porsche to plate the Taycan up and then change to personalised after I get it -

still undecided however, since it would mean a lot of hassle changing info for parking apps, insurance(s), warranties, finance etc.

cheers

You almost can’t win - there will be hassle at one end of ownership or the other. The online number plate people are very good though. Much easier to deal with than Halfords
