I plugged my Taycan in this morning and about an hour later, my wife smelled burning plastic. My NEMA 14-50 receptacle was melting in the garage. It was installed by a trusted electrician but they weren‘t well Experienced in EVs. Btw, the charger has been plugged in for months without being moved. And I have been using this outlet since receiving my 4S in May. 12,000 miles have pulled a lot of kW through this receptacle with no prior problems.
Based on resesrch on other EV forums, certain brands of receptacles have this problem. They seem to be the $8-$15 receptacles that are available at the big box stores. Look up your brand and make sure your outlet is one that an an electrical supply or industrial supplier would sell. Plan to spend $50 or more. I am also replacing my breaker that never tripped and clearing anything combustible from the shelves above my receptacle. And buying another charger supply cable for a cool $115.... But it’s cheaper than a real fire.
