I think the figures speak for themselves, yes 0-60 using launch control is the same..but let’s be honest in day to day driving your more likely just to floor the accelerator than engage launch control.

The performance battery plus adds more power so in normal usage it will be quicker accelerating and doing overtaking manoeuvre.

The base Taycan is extremely slow, maybe worth test driving the 4S with and without performance battery plus if you can.

I have a Model 3 with 500km rated range, but I only use it in the city. I normally only drive about 50km per day, so the range that I have is completely pointless. That’s why I opted for the small battery in my Taycan Because the price was a lot for only 30 miles. I also have a Model Y that I can use for the once a year road trip.

Range only matters for road trips in my opinion. And I’m guessing people who can afford a Taycan are not commuting to work 90 minutes each way. In terms of resale, i don’t think this is an issue because it Is normally difficult to recoup money on ANY options - cars are a depreciating asset any way you look at it, unless you believe Elon (he said “Tesla’s are an appreciating asset.” LOL).

So, do you need the car for long road trips? Do you have an extremely long commute?

Hi ,

I have a dilemma - my dealer has a new , unregistered MY 21 4S which I have paid a deposit on and am due to sign the paperwork , pay the rest of the deposit and pick up this week.

I’m really not sure if I am doing the right thing as I did not spec it and it and I am compromising on quite a few things but the biggest worry is it has the smaller 73kw battery. It also does not have sports chrono.

if I pass on this it could be a long time before another car with a performance battery plus is available , whether to order or otherwise .

My concerns about the smaller battery are
1. Reduced range
2. Reduced power 60-80mph zone in particular
3. Reduced desirability on resale
4. It’s late in the cycle for a MY21

I’m buying this via my company on HP for maximum tax benefits so no guaranteed minimum value , just a final payment to own it. No option to hand the car back for a guaranteed minimum residual value. All the risk of resale value and time to sell are on me.

Should I pass on this car and wait for a car with a performance plus battery ? Don’t want to be stuck with something which is difficult /slow to sell on.
Are you getting a discount and if so, how much? If you're not saving any money, then I would order one to your specifications and wait or find a different car at another dealer that both saves you money and more closely meets your whims and desires.

Thanks for all your replies. It really helps.
I can’t go for a demonstrator as my company has to be the first registered keeper for 100% capital allowance and 2% benefit in kind . That’s why I have been searching for an unregistered car.

the rest of the spec is
Volcano grey
Crayon leather interior
Privacy glass
Grey top windscreen
Electric charge port cover
Ambient lighting
Porsche led door puddle lights
Porsche crests on front headrests
22kw on board charger
150kw on board charger
20” sport aero wheels
14 way comfort seats
Pano roof?
Rear Axle Steer?
360 Panoramic mirrors incl electric folding?

If no, then another reason to walk away as some of these are 'expected'.

Yes , pano roof , 4 +1 rear seats , Bose , rear camera
The build code is PMZHKZX8

I didn’t think it was possible to get a discount on these cars in the uk or anywhere else where the waiting list is so long ?

Hi , no I don’t have long commute as I work from home and drive out to see customers but nothing usually more than 35- 50 miles each way , plus I have a 22k charger at home .

my concerns about the small battery are will it be difficult to sell on - don’t want to get stuck with an undesirable car and will i notice it’s slower than a 4s with performance plus battery.

thanks for sharing your thoughts - it’s really helpful

I would pass and spec what you want. The lead time is about 4-5 months at the moment. I placed a deposit on 13 July and have been given a lockdown date end Sept with delivery end Nov/early Dec. Might or might not materialise of course.
If your dealer is quoting longer, phone round some other dealers. You might hit lucky and get a soon cancellation. Or an earlier build slot. All you will lose is a couple of hours on the phone.

Check with your accountant but my understanding is HMRC will class a demo car as new for corporation tax relief

Speed of home charging is never an issue. Everybody needs to sleep, so you've got a minimum time of 10 hours to charge.

I doubt the small battery would make the car "undesirable". I mean, we are only talking a 30 mile difference. If it was so undesirable, Porsche would never be able to sell the small battery to any of their customers.

I believe the speed is the same because the bigger battery also makes the car heavier.

Lead time for new orders should be VERY long due to the microchip shortage. But check with your dealer. I'm so picky, I never considered buying an existing build, but I'm also patient so I was willing to wait 6 months. I placed my order in May and I will get my car in early December.

I made the mistake of taking a car off the lot at a discount when I bought my first R8. It was missing all sorts of stuff I really wanted, and it was easily the biggest mistake I've ever made buying a car.

Unless the Taycan is your beater, and it's chump change to buy it, you should wait for something that is pretty close to exactly what you want.

I was *much* happier a few years later when I bought my 2nd R8 and it had all the stuff that the first car was missing (plus I took a detour and drove a 981 Boxster S for a couple of years between them :p )

Agreed with @Miwa : car for 100k+ should be exactly what I wanted to have.

Thank you , I did - unfortunately a demo does not qualify - had to be first registered keeper

CA23153 - Plant and Machinery Allowance (PMA): First Year Allowance (FYA): expenditure on cars with low carbon dioxide emissions
Businesses of all sizes can claim 100% FYAs on capital expenditure on a car provided that:
  • the car is ‘unused and not second hand’, and is first registered on or after 17 April 2002;
  • it is an electric car or a car with qualifying CO2 emissions of not more than a specified amount;
  • the expenditure is incurred between 17 April 2002 and 31 March 2025; and
  • the expenditure is not excluded by the general FYA exclusions, see CA23110.

The qualifying CO2 emissions have been reduced since the allowance was introduced. For the period:
  • 17 April 2002 to 31 March 2008 the limit was 120gm per km driven
  • 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2013 the limit was 110gm per km driven
  • 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2015 the limit was 95gm per km driven
  • 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2018 the limit was 75gm per km driven
  • 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2021 the limit is 50gm per km driven
  • 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2025 the limit is 0gm per km driven
New cars are ‘unused and not second hand’. You should accept a car is unused and not second hand even if it has been driven a limited number of miles for the purposes of testing, delivery, test driven by a potential purchaser, or used as a demonstration car. A car’s carbon dioxide emissions figure is shown on the vehicle registration document (the ‘V5’). Emissions figures for most makes and models can be obtained from ‘Car fuel and CO2 emissions data’, gov.uk.
The definition of a car follows the normal meaning in CAA01/S268A CA23510. Expenditure on a taxicab can also qualify for 100% FYAs if the cab meets the conditions above, even if it is not a car within the meaning of Section 268A.

I think you will find most Porsche dealers are aware that a demo car qualifies for the first year rate, and are happy to supply a letter stating it has been used for demonstration purposes
