This reminds me of a time I had a problem unlocking my Volvo S40 back in 2008. One day out of the blue it just wouldn't open with the key. So I had to use the manual "emergency metal key" – triggering the alarm but at least I managed to get in.
The next morning, I could see a neighbour – who I didn't know well – in our underground car park – really stressed. I asked what's up – he said he was trying to get into his car – it wouldn't open and he was going to be late for a flight. I hung around to see if I could help but his car wouldn't open.
I had the same problem – but I actually didn't mention it to the neighbour – I didn't really put 2+2 together yet – mostly because my car had first failed at my workplace and this was at home – 20 km apart.
I'm still manually opening my car and waiting for a service appointment the next day. I'm stuck in traffic in the city and I notice there is a lady in a Mini that's struggling to get their car to open. It's then I realise – that this is a much more common problem than I had ever appreciated. I'd no idea it was so frequent.
The problem persisted and I drove the car to my nearest service centre. They took it in and I waited in customer waiting area. After 15 mins they came back to say they could not see any issue with the car and it was outside waiting for me to drive it away.
I say – damn thats annoying – but glad that its working. They had plugged it into the computer and maybe that reset something. I go out to the car – and its the same problem. I bring the service people out and they are surprised.
We get back into the car using the manual key and they drive it around to the workshop to take another look.
They are back out – its working fine!
I ask, can I go into the workshop to see it working – they agree. I walk into the workshop and it won't open.
It's then that I realise - I am carrying around my apartment underground car park fob – is there something up with that?
I leave the fob out in the customer waiting area – walk back to the car – and boom - it works.
It turns out the fob was constantly transmitting even though the garage button wasn't being pressed – a faulty unit. Everywhere I walked for the past few days – nobody could open their car and I never put it together that it was ME that was causing it.
It wasn't a common problem – it was just common around me for those few days – accidentally carrying around a 433Mhz jammer!
