Damaged rear door

Hey all,

I was recently reversed into by my parents neighbour whilst I had already reversed out established and ready to drive away.

damage didn’t look too bad but I was also trying to be nice to the neighbour for my parents sake.

had it go to my mechanic the following day to be assessed and verdict was new door as aluminium doors aren’t so easy to fix. Had several quotes all saying the same thing and varying between £7-10k not including reinstating ppf.

created this thread more for information rather than sympathy

I will update more as things progress. But below are some pictures of the damage

Geez, that’s really bad. I would have guessed a full door skin replacement and a bill of at least $10k.

Glad you kept your wits about you. Wouldn't want your parents to face a stressful situation whenever in the presence of your neighbor. While I'm sorry this happened, I'm relieved to know there wasn't any damage to the adjacent door or rear quarter panel. Thanks for the information and hope that your Taycan GTS gets quickly and fully restored to its former beauty.

Well that sucks - can entirely empathize as I too had a neighbor do the very same thing to my wife's car - lets just say these neighbors are less than clueless when it comes to being aware of their surroundings.

Wow - door replacement very expensive - curious - is this just the door metal frame i.e. do they (I assume) transfer the window but also all the inner panels, leather inserts, electronics etc from the old to the new or does this replacement door come as an entire complete unit to the spec of your build?

It is really healing but at least no one got hurt. My 5 year old was in the car too but he barely noticed it and is fine. Everything else can be repaired.

From what I understand it is frame that is being changed but I could be mistaken. The ppf did its job And paintwork is fine even though door is not

but to repair it the local Porsche approved repairers have said remove ppf from front door and rear 1/4 panel and roof. Remove the bumper, spray all of the above, reattach bumper and recalibrate all sensors. Wait two weeks for it to dry properly then ppf and ceramic coat it again

Oh man - did not realize your child was onboard - very glad to hear no injuries and all are safe.

Not sure why they need to remove the rear bumper and especially as to why that needs paint? From the pics and your account it sounded like only the door was damaged but perhaps not the case? Also not immediately obvious as to why the ppf on the roof needs to come off as surely the door install would not directly effect anything there - but no experience there!

Re PPF - I remember being side swiped by a white Datsun to the front right of my prior M4 bumper - his car was badly dimpled but the M4 literally was w/o a scratch except for some paint transfer on the PPF and once I polished it off you'd never have known anything all happened - def another benefit.

i think they are doing all of that to blend the carmine red paint as apparently it is very obvious unless blended well across multiple areas.

I think they said they were taking the bumper off as it doesn't need painting but cant remember for sure.

It has now finally been authorised to be repaired by M&A coachworks (an approved porsche repairer and one 6 Taycan repair specialists in the UK (that is what I was told)) so the ball is finally rolling

They damaged your TIE fighter!
I have to say I don't like my parents that much and certainly not my parents neighbours!
I would have run the neighbours through with my lightsaber (after getting their insurance details)

Blending is an absolute must and any qualified shop will insist on blending across panels, not only the color but the clear coat as well. You can rest easy - it will be repaired to new-like condition. Make sure to talk to your PPF guy now to see how they want to handle that. Especially for the rear doors, i'd worry about driving with no ppf so I'd set it up so that I can drive the car straight to ppf from the paint shop. Some PPF shops would not apply before 2-3 weeks of cure time, so make sure to bring it up with the paint shop as there are techniques to cure the paint enough while in the shop to apply the PPF immediately.

7k seems a bit extreme cost for door only. I had the whole front repainted on my 911 turbo a few years back and it cost $7K for paint at the authorized shop which does ferraris, lambos and porsches. In your case, they are probably looking to replace the outside door shell completely and repaint it which should't be that much. Repaint of it should be no more than 1500 with say another 1K for assembly work.

In Europe the bill will quickly reach 8-10k eur.
Hard to find a price for a new rear door, used ones, lightly scratched are 1,4k eur just for the shell on Ebay Germany. Plus one might need other new internal/external bits (eg handle)? I wouldn't be surprised if just the door is shy of 4-5k eur unpainted. If one adds paint, high quality labour, assemble/disassemble etc. one lands there.

1 year ago I had to replace the black plastic lip that runs side to side right below the boot door for a small parking dent somebody left on my Taycan. Bumper had to be taken off, It was above 1k eur

Something to that effect happened to my then new to me Boxster. They had to replace the entire door as well. It wasn’t cheap, but after that I never thought about it anymore, they did a perfect job.
