Day 12: Bratislava (Slovakia) -> Prague (Czechia)
We leave our hotel in Bratislava around midday and head in a north westwards direction – almost directly pointing for Dublin. There is no avoiding that we're on the homeward leg now!
Shortly after leaving the city behind us – we cross over into the Czech Republic for the very first time.
As we didn't get a destination charge last night – we pull into a newish looking IONITY station – to top up our battery for the motorway haul to Prague.
Plug and charge is so handy – especially in countries where you can't read the language – we don't even need to look at the screen on the charger.
Though – if we did – the combination of being able to change language – and the familiar IONITY charging process – would have presented no problems either way.
We pass a truck carrying Fiat 500s!
Speaking of trucks – there are 10s of kilometres of them in a traffic jam heading the other direction. If we were heading for Slovakia – we'd be seriously delayed in these tailbacks.
It's easy driving here – with disciplined motorway behaviour – and most traffic staying about 10% above the posted speed limits.
As we approach Prague – the capital of the Czech Republic – we stop in for our second and final charge today – setting us up well for tomorrow.
Again, the IONITY station is quiet and it starts easily giving us the full 265 kW our car can accept.
And it's – yet another – free vend – thank you IONITY!
It is then a short 20 km into the city centre – with its wide boulevards.
Snarled by evening rush hour traffic.
Eventually finding our way to our hotel and pulling up outside. With such a busy street – we're grateful that the hotel has managed to "reserve" some space with good use of cones.
We can hear "Ireland" mentioned by a few passing pedestrians – so the reg number is peaking interest!
This is one of the few occasions where we actually valued valet parking.
And head into the hotel to check-in.
Before heading out later for some Czech food and beers.

Day 14: Leipzig (Germany) –> Hook of Holland (Netherlands)
After breakfast, we pack up our car and leave our Leipzig hotel on a bright September morning.
Driving across the city centre – with its many tram lines and bus lanes.
We've a real transit day today – and a deadline of making a ferry to the UK at the end of it. Our plan calls for a five stop strategy – keeping the battery between its high speed charging sweet spot of 10% – 80%.
As we didn't get a destination charge last night (we didn't plan or look for it) – our first stop is around 80km from Leipzig. This is one of the more "tucked" away stations – and we're grateful that when we get close – the PCM is accurately showing us its location within the service station area.
Between our stops here in Germany – there is of course the autobahn! It's relatively busy today and there are countless roadworks – that significantly reduce overall pace. But outside those challenges, we are able to make progress at high speed.
The car is just so comfortable at staying above 200 km/h for long periods – and we still find the silence (other than wind noise – tyre noise is drowned out by the wind) every bit as intoxicating as the roar from a in-line 5-cylinder, flat-six or V-8 engine.
We pull in for our second stop at IONITY Lutterberg. The charger starts quickly on plug & charge as normal – but in a first for us – if fails after about seven minutes. Resulting in a red-light at the charging port.
We restart the charge – and it fails again after about four minutes. This is unusually unreliable for IONITY. We try a third time and this time it stays working. We do notice that the power being delivered has dropped from 265 kW down to exactly 150 kW – making us guess that there is a DC rectifier fault in the station – and the dodgy one (or more) has been taken out of the circuit.
If true, it's a good approach – we certainly would value a solid supply at a lower power level than an unreliable one.
It is then that we also notice that the stall beside the one we're charging at – has a "not working/faulty" sign on it.
As this was happening we were also co-ordinating a purchase of a new iPhone from Apple (first world problems, eh?) which had just opened its pre-ordering process around this time – resulting in a bit of waiting around anyways.
So we decided we'd tweak our plan – and overcharge up to 100% at this station – taking out our next planned stop – and that should keep our overall timings in the green.
Back underway – the PCM detects a mammoth tailback on the autobahn – and routes us onto some rural roads – to avoid it.
It actually clearly routes us to reach our next – and final in Germany – charging stop by these roads – so we get to avoid traffic and still reach our chargers efficiently.
Unlike Apple Maps – earlier in our trip – this is very impressive.
We take on some more power – nicely keeping our car in its battery sweet spot. We are arriving at these stations with relatively low – often single digit stage-of-charge – but the PCM estimations are so accurate – it gives us no worries or range anxieties.
The only thing – is that we're driving a lot faster on the autobahn than it uses when estimating – so we generally arrive with around 12% less battery then the estimate is – due to the high speeds. However, we're aware of this and plan accordingly.
The PCM assumes a speed of 130 km/h on the autobahn – where we are closer to 180km/h to 220 km/h when conditions allow.
We cross over into The Netherlands.
Driving into the setting sun – where the 100 km/h limits seem almost like stand-still after spending the day on German autobahns.
We have one final charging stop between Utrecht and Rotterdam – mostly for tomorrow. This station is covered in mud splatters - very strange – its all over the stalls, the cables and even the DC rectifier cabinets!
Where we're charging beside a nice Crayon (Chalk) Taycan 4S.
And as darkness falls, we reach Hook of Holland.
Checking-in for our overnight ferry.
And drive straight onto the waiting boat – with no queuing.
And park up on a deck – that doesn't appear to be that busy. We've arrived about two hours before scheduled departure – but just as well – as the boat leaves 45 minutes early!
Though a long day – the combination of IONITY, the infrastructure in Germany and the Netherlands and the car itself make for a very enjoyable experience.

Day 15: Harwich (United Kingdom) -> Dublin (Ireland)
After yet another mirror smooth crossing – we arrive into Harwich in the United Kingdom ahead of time at the ungodly hour of 05:30 (5:30am). Though they allow the trucks off first – so it will be closer to 06:30 (6:30am) before we'll disembark.
When called – we climb down to the mostly empty vehicle deck.
And drive off the ship into the United Kingdom.
Where we're reminded to drive on the left! Though this is our "native" side of the road – after spending such a long time on "the other side" – it always takes a bit of concentration to adjust back.
Our first stop is at IONITY Cambridge.
Where we notice – for the first time – that IONITY are offering free wifi at their chargers. We've no need for it – as we have free roaming in the UK and across the EU. But given that these chargers need an internet connection anyways – its a neat offering.
With the timing of ferries today – we've about five additional hours to kill. But we're tired after our long road-trip and decided to just take it easy and spend additional time at rest stops – rather than squeeze in an activity. We had considered going to Bletchley Park – but we've been there so many times already!
Eventually, arriving at our final charging stop of this road-trip: IONITY Stafford. It also happened to be the first charging stop of the trip – we've come full circle!
Where – as I mentioned previously – it was busy and there was at least three cars ahead of us in the queue – at this six stall IONITY station. At the risk of stereotyping – the British are so good at orderly queuing – that it really introduces no stresses at all. Everyone just waits their place – no jumping – and after about 30 minutes – its our turn.
We are ambling along anyways – so we welcomed the wait!
Some more motorway afterwards – and we're then crossing North Wales.
Before arriving at Holyhead – we pull over for an unscheduled call-of-nature stop!
And arrive into Holyhead port well on time to catch our final ferry.
It's 20:00 (8pm) and the awaiting cabin bed is welcome.
Arriving into Dublin on-schedule just before midnight.
And taking the short 20 minute journey to our home. Where we park next to our Fiat 500e – which has had its longest period of being idle since its purchase – and has only lost 2% during the 15 days away.
We arrive in with 13% state-of-charge and plug into our home Zappi charger for a true "destination" charge.

Thank you for following along on this 5,422 km road-trip. We really enjoyed ourselves – were fortunate to have had remarkable weather. All our plans worked out perfectly and at no stage was having an EV any kind of hassle or limiting factor at all.
In fact, the opposite: we lived on free destination charging for much of it.
During our planning – we never assume we'll get destination charging – and treat it as a bonus when we do.
At some of our overnight stops we could have chased it down harder – but there is no longer any specific need – as public charging is now at a standard in this part of Europe – to make it optional.
We were very happy with the performance and range of our Turbo S model – it is no problem doing long trips with it.
Overall we did 5422 km over 94:34 hours, with an average speed of 59 km/h, consuming 23.3 kWh/100km.

Another bit of interesting data is that we captured 2,143 GB of video data along this trip – from iPhones, GoPro's, Drones and dashcam. Including a full video record of every meter driven from our FitcamX installation.

Charging Log
We charged a total 27 times – 14 times at IONITY and got 7 destination charges at hotels or nearby car parks.
We used a total of 1,240 kWh (1.2 MWh) of electricity over the 5,422 km trip for a total cost of €356.66 or €6.57/100 km (which includes VAT/sales taxes).
At no stage, were we "minding" our Taycan Turbo S – the opposite – on the twisty bits or the autobahn – we pushed it hard!
On average, we took in 46 kWh per charge, with this rising to 48.87 kWh for the DC only chargers. We arrived into DC chargers with an average 25% state-of-charge and left with 84%.
The average IONITY cost per charge – across all jurisdictions was €14.83 – showing the remarkable value of sticking with IONITY as much as possible.
We were gifted a total of 276 kWh by hotels, the Grossglockner Alpine High Road and car parks. In general, we "lived" on free destination charging during the middle of the trip – and used paid IONITY for the transit portions.
In fact, the only hotel where we were charged additional for electricity was the most expensive hotel (€1,358/night) we've ever stayed in: The Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa in Interlaken, Switzerland. All the others included overnight charges in their room rates or valet parking costs.
We charged a total 27 times – 14 times at IONITY and got 7 destination charges at hotels or nearby car parks.
We used a total of 1,240 kWh (1.2 MWh) of electricity over the 5,422 km trip for a total cost of €356.66 or €6.57/100 km (which includes VAT/sales taxes).
