Used Taycan with replaced battery - red flag?

Hey guys,

There is a CPO Taycan near me that has been on the dealer lot for a year. I called about it - SA confirmed it is in their service department getting it’s battery pack replaced and then will be put up for sale.

Would this be considered a positive as it’s a 2 year old car with a new battery pack? Or red flag that it happened at all in the first place?

My initial instinct is to offer a low price due to it’s history - but don’t really care how good a deal it is if I’m possibly signing myself up for headaches.

You could view this as a positive attribute as well. As someone who just had their battery recalled+replaced at 20k miles, I’m more confident in the car today plus I have a brand new battery that’s showing better range and efficiency.

Since it is a CPO, you should be able to get a free carfax to verify that it wasn't a buyback car. Even that wouldn't be so bad if it was just a bad battery, but it would show up in the history when you sell. There were a few Taycan buybacks a year ago because there were some bad batteries, and they couldn't get the new battery part in time before the lemon law kicked in. Those were likely also good deals. I'm not certain, but I don't believe Porsche would CPO a buyback. I saw these cars at a non-Porsche dealer in Atlanta who specializes in buybacks. But check.

I think it's not a red flag - new battery replaced under warranty by Porsche factory certified service with appropriate ongoing warranty…

I would not shy away from a ICE vehicle with a new motor or transmission - it means one of hte major drive train components has less wear/tear/runtime on it.

cars break, they get fixed, it's not a problem IMHO.

I agree. Not a red flag. I’d add that “lemons” are misconstrued (in cars).

cars are machines. They can be fixed. Lemon laws are really about protecting consumers from bad dealerships that repeatedly fail to correctly diagnose and repair the problem.

I’d buy it with the fresh battery. My 2020 4S+ had its battery replaced in summer 2023, now with about 15% better range.

A car without an incident will have a better resale value than one with, all else being equal.
