Seems to be a lot of finger pointing at the charger, but the car could equally be at fault or indeed as happens both may be at fault/share a degree of responsibility.

I think if you told electrical engineers twenty years ago – that ordinary consumers would be handling plugs with up to 1000V and 500 amps – they wouldn't believe you!

Still, petrol is probably a lot more dangerous. Does Oregon still not allow you fill your own tank?
I R an electrical engineer. I once (long time ago) mis-wired a 5V 50Amp DC power supply. It informed me of its displeasure by turning a good-sized section of aluminum bus bar into aluminum vapor, accompanied by a sound not unlike an M-80 going off. I learned a lot of respect for electrons that day.

And that is just 250w. 150kw would make. Big noise if it really was an uncontrolled “detonation”. I suspect a breaker popped.

this guy is one of the worst video editors i've ever seen, but.. he does capture a few high current dc fuse blows... and, uh, yeah. it's an explosion. it would certainly give pause upon hearing it emanate from one's car.

Where does liability fall in this scenario? This can’t be covered by car insurance, can it?

Can’t it? I figure the insurance companies are there to protect the banks investment due to a loan.

its' eitehr covered by Rivian, EA or Insurance comprehensive - in fact I would assert this is very definition of comprehensive - Insurance company will go after Rivian and/or EA if this starts happening alot - and drive change - because if they cut too many checks on this issue they will drop coverage until manufacturer/charger-network cleans up their act…

if they leave this bill to the EV owner I would be bad for the industry.

Presumably by whomever is deemed ‘at fault’ by some court….now then hands up whose fault was it? Not me sir it was them…?

Perhaps. That doesn’t stop blown engines from not being covered.
Not remotely equivalent in any way.

The IC equivalent of this would be your car catching fire whilst refuelling. Then liability could be faulty petrol pump of leaky fuel tank - for example.
