I have a 4S on order and have just received this note

‘Porsche has changed the mobile charger connect price and has now been made a chargeable option at £767.00. This was previously a no cost compulsory option meaning all cars spec’s previously’

Do I need this option/spend? I have had a hybrid 7 series over last 2 years and have installed a good wall mounted charger at home, I also have the use of a 3 phase charger at work which will be the main place I charge the car

Could I just plug the 4S in to one of these chargers and not bother with the ‘Mobile Charger Connect’

interestingly, I have not found a single video online of a Taycan being charged at home without using the MCC charger

Any advice would be very appreciated

No you are fine with the chargers you have . I assume they are the standard type 2 connectors.

You can also easily buy a standard type 2 cable from the Internet. Just make sure you spec the 3 phase charging cable for 32 amps, ie 22 kW.

The Porsche Charger is way overpriced and has absolutely no extra features!

If these are type2 charging points (which in all likelihood they are), then 'No' you don't need the Porsche mobile charger. You should ensure you have a type2 AC charger for non-tethered chargers ie. ones without a cable.

The only thing you will not have without the Porsche charger is the ability to go somewhere where this is a power socket but no charger.

For historical context, Porsche made the charger a 'must have' option which was charged for and then for MY21 included it in the price as a no-cost option. Not sure what the latest position is as I have my car, so have not been looking at the configurator.

in short, if I was configuring my car today, I would not configure this option.

Agree, I even use a Tesla charger at my office and a Powerdale (www.powerdale.com) at home. Just make sure you get 11kW out of them. If your previous car was a hybrid, it might be a 3.6kW charger.

My understanding having had that charger as a forced option with my 4S (and now having ordered a Turbo and facing this extra charge) is that the “all singing & dancing) Connect charger that has been supplied up to now is extra cost now but a standard Connect charger is included “free” ... it was important to me because I have a commando plug setting at my holiday home but 90% of the other features of the higher spec Connect were a nuisance, eg coded touch pad etc ...
hopefully the advice I’ve got is correct because I found my commando lead connect threw the PCB if charge was set at full 32amp, possibly a quirk of my holiday home distribution board although most electricians will tell you that “a little DC current is normal where any form of new appliance is involved“ (quoting my electrician here so pls don’t ask me about this ?‍♂)

In the UK the standard charger rather than the PMCC (the Connect version) is included in the base price. In the US it’s not. Not sure of the rest of the world. Your wall box will be great for home and you can use the standard charger which comes with (in the UK) a 13A 3 pin lead and a commando lead, as a portable one. It’s a bit big sadly. Can’t remember if it’s a red or blue commando plug tho.

Waste of money - save the £767 or get another extra instead!
