What’s the thoughts on the forum regarding dash cams. Noticed that road angel are doing a gps/laser detector with camera built in? Only thing is it looks kinda ugly. Main reason I was looking was cop detector... laser etc. If I could hide the detectors and just have a switch to turn on with audible and led light or something that would be cool. Thoughts?

I've been looking into dash cams more to capture any potential vandalism, but I am just not crazy about idea of installing myself or trusting someone to do it ;)

Definitely will not be doing it myself. Might not bother at all. I kinda like the idea of laser detectors but they are not very good as I understand it.

By the time your detector alerts you to a Laser, the cop has already measured your speed.

I'm going to be in the same boat. I run laser jammers and integrated radar on my current daily and am really worried about moving to the Taycan without anything. My other system has paid for itself. The someone's comment about being afraid to have it installed, here's an install of a system at a place here in the US on a Panamera. It's remarkably well done but it's also remarkably expensive.

I don't take delivery for a few more weeks but I'll have to map out what I'm going to do.

I'm going to install 2 x dash cams into my 4s shortly (one at the front and one at the rear). The plan is to hide the wires behind the trim panels and run them to the fuse panel so that there is permanent power to them (even when the car is turned off). This may sound daunting, but from this video I've watched for a Cayenne, it doesn't look too hard. I'm by no means an expert, but if people want me to, I can make a video showing step-by-step how to do it. Let me know if you think this will be useful?

What would be really useful is to understand the tricks and tips and issues (if any) that you ran into.

Also, have you looked into Mirror Tap?

Lastly, are there any dash cams that can easily be turned off, ideally automatically via gps? I also want to use it as a sentry mode,‘but don’t need it running and using battery when it is sitting in my garage

Thanks!

I'll be sure to capture any tips & tricks as I embark upon my dash cam fitting journey.

Thanks for bringing Mirror Tap to my attention. Not sure whether there are connections on the back of the rear view mirror - will take a look tomorrow morning in the light. What a time save that will be if there is provision for this product.

I got a little too 'excited' in my previous post - the dash cam(s) shouldn't remain on when the vehicle ignition is off as this will drain the battery (eventually). Dash cams should be wired to 'ignition switched live' fuses, i.e. they are powered when the ignition is on, and not powered when the ignition is off.

On the dash cam I have in my M5 it can be wired to stay on and it goes into a low energy mode and comes alive based on impact like if a car bumps you parking. Idea being it’ll capture at least the plate driving away. The sensitivity was adjustable. Pretty cool setting/feature but my car was way too sensitive to any voltage draw and as a result every day it had a complaint when I started it. I gave in and wired the camera to an ignition source.

Also, some dashcams have an option to add a separate battery to operate when car is off.

I already had an Escort radar detector and just added the Escort M1 camera to it. I'm using a MirrorTap from the mirror to power both. It's not the best dash cam but it's good enough and combing the power and mount with the radar detector made it the obvious choice for me. One area I'm struggling with is where to mount it. Right now it's on the sticky/suction cup mount where the radar detector is directly under the rear view mirror and the dash cam aligns centered and behind the mirror. The car is so minimal and modern that this seems a bit cluttered but I haven't found a better position for it.

I hear you re the clutter - something we'd all like to avoid. I don't understand why vehicle manufacturers aren't offering a 'dash cam' option - as cameras tend to get built into vehicles these days for some assistance systems. Tesla's Autopilot is the only built-in dash cam service that I'm aware of.

My rear view mirror doesn't have any power facility, so a MirrorTap for me is a no go. However, I only have the standard rear-view mirror and not the auto-dimming version. If anyone has the auto-dimming rear-view mirror, would you be so kind as to check whether there is any power facility behind it - it could potentially save a lot of people the hassle of running a cable for a dash cam (thanks in advance).
