what am I doing or not doing to cause this?

The car will give a low battery warning message if the key battery is low.

It lights up for a number of reasons, not all are documented. There is certain information stored in the key for service and maintenance issues. The key can also light up for a number of other reasons not explained in the manual.

Thanks all for your input. I've since spoke to my dealer and she told me that the flashing red is just another courtesy light (that is and works alongside) part of the option when you open the door and the floor shows the Porsche on the floor...For the record I don't think that this is correct. Surely using the colour red which in 99% of cases in the motoring world symbolises "warning" would be a big mistake from a design point of view?

My key does this too sometimes, I was going to ask my local dealer but no point as they are F**cking useless
Might be worth asking @LukeManning as he seems to be the only Porsche dealer who is helpful

The key actually has its own memory that stores things like driver profile (thats why different keys will log into different accounts or guest if not assigned), as well as service data, mileage etc. Only Porsche Centres have key readers but otherwise data is not useful for owners.

When the key light flashes it is just syncing data from the car to the key and vice versa to let the car know if key battery is low or not found etc.

I don’t believe this is true. Your settings are stored in the car and are associated with your profile, not the key. The car chooses which profile to use based on your key. So the settings are not stored in the key itself. That would be an odd way to implement the functionality.

The Good to Know app says that there is at least some information that is stored on the key for service and maintenance purposes.

As mentioned the key holds the last user profile that was logged into the car when it was shut down with that key near enough to sync data. The red light is the key reading or writing data to/from the car. Settings associated with the profile are stored in the cloud, not in the key. The key also stores miles and a few other maintenance things, like previously stated.

Does this mean if I log into my profile in another Taycan I’ll get my preferences? Like a Roaming Profile?

Sorry for the late reply!

The Key Fob flashes when the car is preheating or precooling. There is an option in your PreHeat/Cool section called PreHeat/Cool with key fob. When you press the unlock button on your key fob, it sends a signal to the car to start preHeating/Cooling the car for you.

The car remembers your driver profiles, but the key does remember the last profile that started the car - just in case the car were to forget the profile it would still set up your steering column, mirrors, and seats for you from that last profile and give you a chance to relog in.

Hope this helps, and hope your dealership gets better!

Yes that's what Porsche are thinking with this approach. Consider a not-too-distant-future platform where you subscribe to a car service, your one key unlocks whatever car you have selected that day and retrieves your preferences from the cloud (at least those relevant to the selected vehicle). Or a multi-Porsche household where you and your significant other routinely swap cars.
