Cruise control won't automatically maintain a distance from the vehicle directly in front of you?

Can someone help me understand why cruise control will not automatically maintain a distance from the vehicle directly in front of you? With cruise control not engaged and the brake regen/recup set to "A" (set from the steering wheel), the car automatically breaks to maintain a safe distance from the car in front. But when cruise control is engaged the auto recup "A" automatically disengages. These should work together like many other modern cruise control systems.

I believe I have Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) if it is a standard feature. I do not have InnoDrive.

Thanks.

ACC is not a standard feature. It is a $2k option.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Is that all the ACC does - maintain a distance from the car in front? Is that a FOD feature?

I don't know if it's available FOD, but I would assume so. ACC maintains distance, slows and speeds up the car, stops and holds the car, and then restarts you as long as you're not stopped for an extended period. I love it in slow/stop and go freeway traffic. It does everything but steer. I also have ALK, but don't care for it or use it. I don't think it works very well, so I just uncheck that box in the PCM.

ACC cannot be added via FOD. It requires a physical radar module in the lower front bumper. If you have ACC, ALK and Innodrive can be added as FOD, but needs ACC optioned first

Don't rely on Auto Regen to control your car to a stop is the first thing.

When standard cruise control (which I believe is what you have and not the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)) is active manually augmented recuperation is disabled as the car will use motor braking (and therefore recuperation) to maintain a constant speed. Effectively it is in a transparent 'auto' mode rather than one you have triggered yourself and certainly not controlled reliably by the vehicle in front.

Good to know. Thanks. Yes, it appears I have standard CC.

Not relying on Auto Regen to control the car to a stop makes sense. Do you have more info - experiences, etc. - to expand on this?

Also, don't rely on your parking sensors when you're cruising behind a semi. ??

The auto regen uses the camera system to judge the distance in front. Anything from a dirty windscreen, rain or reflective lights can throw it off.

Apart from being stated in the manual I find it generally unreliable and alarming at times. Much prefer manual recuperation if I feel I need to recuperate some energy.

auto regen will slow the car. What it will not do is activate the brakes, it will only use the electric motors to regen. ACC will use the brakes and regen to keep distance or stop as needed.

You will crash first. Auto regen must not be used this way given it wasn't designed to be a cheap alternative to ACC.

Agree 100%. Auto regen is only using the camera and that is not good enough to be a proper ACC solution.

When you do have ACC optioned – with the appropriate 24 GHz radar unit – that camera is also used to assist the radar.

This sensor fusion (provided by the zFAS control box from Audi) – has really helped the radar detect difficult traffic situations and make better decisions. For example, it's the camera that will recognise the vehicle in front is a motorbike and then the car is better able to interpret the radar return signature.

Anyways, this is all mute if you don't have ACC optioned!
