Hi all, first time EV owner. I’m stoked about getting my 2020 Taycan. Should be here by the end of the month. The car comes with the mobile charger connect and 150/400 options.

The previous owners of my home owned Teslas, and had upgraded the electricity in the garage. They used wall chargers that were connected by three wires (see pic).

in order to save money, I would prefer to use the mobile charger connect, but as I understand it, it is only a plug-in option. Can I simply connect these wires into a Nema 6-50 plug and connect my mobile charger connect to that?

should I do things differently? I appreciate any input since this will be my first time.

Spend the extra $500 to in a different EVSE and save yourself the headaches down the road. As already mentioned, the Porsche ones for the US market are ?

Sounds good. I’m leaning toward the chargepoint hardwired charger—should I get something different? Tesla universal?

Sounds like for the hardwire, I just be plug the above wires in and I’m good to go?

I'd definitely be checking out that Tesla universal if I were in the market right now.

I have a Tesla wall connector, the J1772 version and is hardwired, which is much much safer than any plug in version even if you're using the Hubble outlet. It requires 3 wires - 2 hot, and a ground.

The short answer is yes, as long as the two large wires are 6 guage, and you check the breaker box to be sure the 6 guage are wired to a double 50 amp breaker, and the ground is properly attached to the boxes ground strip. If that's all good, make sure the breaker is switched off, and you can attach a 50 amp NEMA socket to plug into. Plenty of videos online to show you how.
There certainly are other charger options but plugging in the Porsche charger is not an unreasonable choice.

Hire an electrician - and install either the ClipperCreek/Enphase 100 amp J-1772 EVSE (80 amp one wold also be ok) or Install the Tesla Universal Wall Charger (60 amps)

my "ideal" (un-necessary) is to install a subpanel off that juice/awesome/excellent 100 amp feed - and then it will be easier to add your 2nd EVSE in the future - but again that's un-necessary but easy given your setup.

100 amps is overkill for a single EV - but excellent for an eventual duel EV setup. (EV+EV or EV+Hybrid)

Both the Clipper Creek and Tesla Wall Chargers can be configured to "share" load - so they can charge the EV's as fast as possible but not overload the total capacity of the shared circuit (in your case 100 amps).

  • Electrician
  • 100 amp subpanel
    • it will be easy to add the eventual 2nd EVSE in the future if you have a subpanel
  • 60 amp breaker to feed a Tesla Wall charger universal
  • 50 amp breaker feeding a hubble NEMA 14-50 outlet (backup/spare - rarely used)

Some utilities offer a highly discounted price on Chargers (that's how I got my Juicebox)..worth trying!...btw, keep track of your spending because your federal taxes will be reduced. Put your Porsche charger in the trunk for emergencies and try not to use it!

Excellent post - the best part is........................Hire An Electrician................unless you are really skilled at electrical work. I am not and even though this seems easy, $500 is pocket change compared to setting the house on fire! ?

Thanks guys for all the input. Thanks to this thread, I purchased the Tesla Universal wall charger and already set up an electrician to come by. I figure I could do it myself but I'd rather live to drive the car. :CWL:

Also, im reaching out to my utility company to see if they can give me any breaks.
