Hey I like to keep my things nice. I traded in a car once because I caused a small scrape.

:CWL: The amazing thing is that you're in Texas, home of some of the biggest widest parking spots south of Michigan! In New York, even in the suburbs, you rarely get anything in much bigger than 8 ft wide. Back in Michigan, you could go to a WalMart and get a 9 foot wide spot.
The trucks and SUVs are huge in Texas yet the parking spots are no larger than any other metro. I don’t know about the specific laws around the state but in Dallas there is a parking spot quantity requirement tied to square footage of your store/restaurant/bar so the tendency is to create more (smaller) parking spots as a result. Makes zero sense considering the average vehicle size in this city.

Also, this thread is silly. Unless you’re comparing the Taycan to compact cars in Europe, its dimensions are on par with luxury sedans from every German, Japanese and Korean OEM. It’s shorter than the 5 series and has more practical and comfortable passenger space. Spec the CT and you have better cargo as well. The rear visibility is questionable but the forward visibility is superb and it’s easy to place the car wherever you want.

The Taycan is a EV sports car and built do high speed cornering. To make that happen you need an long wheelbase for stability.

The Taycan is only 12-15 inch longer then a 911 992, generally it has the same footprint. There is a huge science about what is the right balance between wheelbase/weight/width/performance, which is totally different topic that even engineers break their about.

When you look at the record holders for the fastest lap times on the Nurburg Ring in Germany, these cars have a long wheelbase.

Having said that, the dimensions of the Taycan are just fine ?

When the new shape Audi A6 Avant was released, I didn’t buy one because I reasoned that it was too big for the lanes and single track roads where I live.
Just over two years later, I was the proud owner of a 4S which is longer, wider and has half the luggage space.
However whilst waiting for my 4S CT, I put a deposit down on a Lotus Eletre.
10 days later my wife asked me how big it was and after checking, which I hadn’t pre ordering, had to confess that it was even longer and wider than the Porsche! ?
Deposit returned and 8 months into CT ownership, I can tell you that you will soon get accustomed to the size. There are certainly some car parks I would not enter and some parking bays that are concerning, but that is no different than if I had bought the A6.
Enjoy your purchase, it is the best car I have ever driven.

If you ask my wife she will say @DerekS and I are twins from different mothers when it comes to caring for my cars.

However, if you ask me (no one's asking - I get that), I'm becoming more like @TDinDC. Like @DerekS I will always look for the right-most spot if available, and if there are monster trucks in the lot/garage, I simply won't park next to them. But like @TDinDC, I often park in more or less "normal" parking spots all the time, in part to challenge my OCD about this issue.

But to be honest, when I get dinged, it still pisses me off and I end up trying to get it fixed. I guess I'm still a twin after all ...

Haha. Well, I’m not blind either. I wouldn’t park next to an oversized or banged up vehicle, or one that is poorly parked. So I would say I pick the best of the normal spots.

I actually think you are less likely to get a door ding in an obviously nice Porsche than you are with a more “normal” car, just like the police are more likely to let you off for speeding in a nice Porsche than in a normal car. . .

and yes, I don’t like dings either, but as with all things, perspective matters: if a ding is my biggest problem, life’s pretty fantastic, not to mention the fact that I am lucky enough to drive a car where I notice a ding

That has most definitely NOT been my experience.
Other people are not deferential to your car because it's nice.

One time a guy in a green Camry dinged my car WHILE I WAS SITTING IN IT.
I got out and was screaming at him, he claimed he didn't do anything....despite the green paint transfer on my red Targa.

Fortunately in that case, the contact point was the mirror and PPF saved the day so I let him go.

People are thoughtless and careless. If I could pay someone to watch my car like Henry Hill in Goodfellas, I would!

Ok, sorry to hear that, but it is just a car . . .
That’s honestly why I sell cars that I become too attached to in that way.
If a village idiot can enrage me by harming my car, or if I’m too nervous to drive it, time to sell and buy something fun that I don’t worry about!

Beater cars are loads of fun . . .

I've tried that too. Every time I leave Porsche for a normal car, I am unhappy until I give in and go back to a Porsche.

I tell people who have never driven one - it's a drug, be sure you're up for it because once you're in it's hard to get out. :)

You don’t have to leave Porsche, just get one you don’t care about as much!

I’m actually being serious. While a GT3 RS with Weissach package would be a dream, it’s easy enough to understand why someone might be nervous driving it around town or even driving it the way it should be driven on a track. In that case, I bet the person would have a lot more fun and be way more relaxed in, say, a 996 GT3. It’s not as amazing but worry free pleasure is glorious indeed!

It has been my experience, my beater Ford had gotten dings and even worse, while my Boxster stayed pristine. And I believe the "broken windows" theory is at play here. People see, even just subconsciously, a nice, clean car, and they get, again subconsciously, more careful when opening their door.

Your view of humanity is a lot more generous than mine.

That's true. Seems that "normal" people actually take more care when parking next to a nice Porsche but the morons will treat it the same.

I try to park to the most right side or most left side (when backing into the spot) and try to leave as much space as possible but there's still that worry of the first "ding"
