Cool. How did you get the trim off? And, what did you plug into?
I've not started the dash cam install yet. Car already has to go back to Porsche as the car is having connectivity issues

I already had an Escort radar detector and just added the Escort M1 camera to it. I'm using a MirrorTap from the mirror to power both. It's not the best dash cam but it's good enough and combing the power and mount with the radar detector made it the obvious choice for me. One area I'm struggling with is where to mount it. Right now it's on the sticky/suction cup mount where the radar detector is directly under the rear view mirror and the dash cam aligns centered and behind the mirror. The car is so minimal and modern that this seems a bit cluttered but I haven't found a better position for it.
Apologies - I've only just realised that you meant you're using a MirrorTap in your Taycan to power your radar detector and dash cam. I assume you have the auto-dimming mirror?

It’s a pain to get off, it took me quite a while. The very top trim over the camera next to the headliner is the easiest, just slide it towards the front of the car away from the headliner. There’s a rubber cord to keep the piece from falling that you’ll need to route out to remove it. The second piece to remove is the bottom trim that’s connected to the mirror. If you squeeze the middle trim piece where it’s connected to the bottom trim at the point closest to the windshield, it releases tabs on the bottom piece and you can slide it straight down. The middle piece is easily removed once the top and bottom are gone. There are three cables going into the mirror. Two together in the corner and one on its own. The positive and negative are the two together. I don’t recall the color but it was obvious. You can google Audi mirror tap instructions. Many use the same trim pieces, that’s how I figured out how to remove mine.

I do but there are plenty of connections for various things behind the trim. I’d find the harness for the reading lights or something else that might work. I’d almost bet the harness for the auto dimming mirror is there even on cars without it.

Thank you for this. It helped a lot!!

It’s pretty much spot on including the wires that you use for power. Getting the front cover against the window off was very hard and it has two little clips that can easily break so be careful.

The front piece (bigger one that touches the section that houses the front reading lights) needs a little bit of help to unclip by moving it straight forward towards the window. NOT DOWN!! There are basically only two clips keeping it in place together with two guides at the very top. Then you have to unclip the rubber piece once its unclipped. That part makes sense once the clips release.

Other than struggling with the front cover of the mirror it went well. I eventually used a sharp trim piece to unclip it. A friend of mind broke his one clip on his 911, so again, be very careful and dont force it.

I'm going to install 2 x dash cams into my 4s shortly (one at the front and one at the rear). The plan is to hide the wires behind the trim panels and run them to the fuse panel so that there is permanent power to them (even when the car is turned off). This may sound daunting, but from this video I've watched for a Cayenne, it doesn't look too hard. I'm by no means an expert, but if people want me to, I can make a video showing step-by-step how to do it. Let me know if you think this will be useful?
Would love to see how you are doing it. Thanks for the offer.

Just a quick update to let folk know that I still haven't got round to doing this, but I will v. shortly. I'm waiting on some diagrams / info. from Porsche to help me locate the fuse panel and the trim panels that will need to be removed + the proper way to remove them.

I had the mirror apart in my 2020 Taycan this morning - instructions are good - but didn't see any obvious molex connectors exposed for a power tap - in fact the whole thing was mostly really really tight as a button

found the rubber cord "holding" the big piece of plastic - and managed to get the two shell pieces off that surround the mirror - one new thing - mine had a piece of red string that was holding the middle small piece (upper portion of the mirror shell) - and all the wire went down and into the mirror with no place to insert the molex tap…

since this is my first time I decided to leave well enough alone and reassemble everything…

there is a lot of wire and connectors I could see in the overhead lighting package but pulling that down from the roof and rummaging around inside it appears to be a different beast for another time

in any case in my Taycan tapping the mirror appears to be an advance DIY project and beyond my comfort level…

FWIW - I have used BlendMount aluminum mounts to hang dashcams from the mirror on other vehicles. Found them to be very well made and they can be adjusted to tuck up tight to the mirror. They list a bracket for the Taycan if you are using a BlackVue camera.

https://blendmount.com/

For power, Snap N Go makes a clean quick connector that runs from the BlackVue dashcam to the OBD connector. Just tuck the wire up behind the headliner and down the A pillar.

Also, some dashcams have an option to add a separate battery to operate when car is off.
I'm scheduled to take delivery of my 4S in March and have been looking into dash cams and plan to do with the Thinkware U1000 front & rear bundle with the radar module. Based on the comment from Reg I'm wondering if adding the iVolt external battery should be part of the install.

The shop I've spoken with about installing the dash cam say they do not "stock or recommend the Thinkware battery pack and do not feel it's necessary" but from everything I'm reading it's recommended to extend the use of the dash cam when it's parked for several days (such as at the airport) and with all the 12v battery issues with the Taycan documented on this forum I'd think it would also help avoid problems with the 12v battery.

Thoughts?

The new Blackvue has an adjustable battery cutoff - so if it sees the battery falling below 12.5 volts (for example) it will electrically disconnect. GIven that, I wouldn't see it as contributing much to any potential 12v issue.

I spoke to my dealer yesterday and asked for their opinion on having a dashcam installed and how it affected the warranty status. As suspected (and alluded to on this and other threads) they weren't keen on having non-Porsche equipment fitted to the vehicle.
However, I was told that Porsche will have their own dashcam solution available "imminently". So at least for a month or two I'm holding off to see what their own solution is.

Very interesting! Following and putting my project on hold.

I installed the front & Rear Nextbase 622w 4K camera.

Placed so you can't actually see the front camera when you are driving.

Pictures attached but the red line shows cable path between the front and rear camera, the yellow is the path between the front camera and the power in the centre console.

Pretty easy install, took about 30 mins and you cant see a single cable.
