The first all-electric sports car, the Taycan…
Porsche Taycan Taycan is a Sports Car 4BAE72B4-72CA-4FDD-8A5E-CC42DBEC99D3

Just came across this old document on my phone and thought of the numerous threads discussing whether the Taycan is a sports car or not, usually in reference to the 911. Well it is according to Porsche in the first sentence of this press release. Do we second guess the quintessential sports car brand’s definition of sports car? 😊

Why wouldn’t it be a sports car? It has just as much performance if not more than other “sports car.” If a Miata can be called a sports car then the taycan definitely is

I have an Aston Martin Vanquish for the weekend and a Taycan Turbo ST for my every(other)day car.

Both have 4 seats. (The AM seats are next to useless) Neither is therefore (imo) a pure sports car. The Aston is a Grand Tourer and the Porsche is a Sporty Estate Car.

The reason AM offer the extra seats is to keep the car out of the sports car insurance bracket.

The Austin Healy, now that’s a sports car.

A sports car is a car that is build for a sport: car racing.
It's as simple as that, hence the name.
All the other cars are just commercial derivatives of that.
Ironically, in some race classes sports cars are build from commercial derivatives of sports cars. 🤭

Taycan is definitely not a pure sports car, but can more or less be turned into one with the right chassis setting and driver mentality:)

As someone that has issued hundreds of Press Releases, I can tell you that they should not be used as an authority of technical definitions. i.e. the premise of the OP that just because a Press Release says it, that it must be true is flawed.

Clearly a personal opinion. For what it's worth, mine is that the Taycan is not a "Sports Car", i.e. a car designed for use in motorsports. But rather it is a "sporty car".

I am an old bloke and for me a sports car has always been small, light, had 2 seats and an open top and handled well.

It didn’t need to have fast acceleration but it was a bonus if it did but the principle requirement was being nimble and good handling.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. You might say Porsche is more accurately a sports vehicle brand.

I remember one of the first Cayenne ads I saw in a car magazine in the early 2000s, on a race track, glowing brake rotors. A paradigm shift at the time.

I agree with most of your points but why "open top"?
You rule out the most and best sports cars ever made!
Or is that the supercar category?
