Unbelievable that this ship with all of these cars is in distress and risk of loss. This really will be a sales killer in this constrained supply chain situation. Now the premium pricing will really go thru the roof w the dealers.

A recent article in The NY Times. I feel awful for everyone on the forum whose car is on this ship.

Two things struck me from the article - 1) With the 4,000 vehicles on board were 189 Bentley's making the possible retail value of the vehicles ~$325M-$375M USD. 2) Porsche had a very understated way of informing a customer of the issue --"Mr. Farah said that a Porsche representative confirmed that his car was on the boat and apologized for the inconvenience."

Best wishes to everyone who has to re-order.

Is nobody waiting or scheduled for delivery worried that there will be a huge inquisition and stop shipment until cause and corrective action is in place?

Not really sure what you mean here. I can't imagine there will be much debate about what should happen to the cars left on the ship unless it's very clear that some portion of the cars were completely undamaged, and unless it's clear that a Taycan was the root cause of the problem, I find it hard to believe that much happens here.

My friends and I were discussing that EV battery could be an issue but it's not proven. Until we know the cause of the fire, no one does anything.

My take on that would be that if the problem was so bad that it burst into flames mere weeks after manufacturing, it would have had to be a defect of quite monumental proportions that would be quite unlikely for such a car to ever make it more than a few months of driving without burning up. If such an issue existed, we'd be seeing it on the already delivered 2022's. Well, unless of course it's caused by that new PCM everyone is excited about...

Makes sense. Good point.

As to the risk of fire from EV´s surely all vehicles are completely discharged before loading the ship. Otherwise it would be like loading ICE-vehicles with a full gastank.

Can a completely discharged battery cause a fire? I dont think so, but Im certainly not an expert.

Looks like they're saying there were about 1,110 Porsches on it:
https://www.thedrive.com/news/44340...hat-burning-cargo-ship-adrift-in-the-atlantic

That said, with 70k annual sales in the US, that's less than a week of production, so it ideally shouldn't impact the overall supply chain by too much (crossing my fingers as someone with a GTS ST scheduled to go into production in about a month). Heck, looking at worldwide delivery of 300k cars last year, that's maybe only two days of production if people are looking for a bit of hope
Yeah...think Porsche should be able to replace the cars via normal production but this isn't normal time/market so wonder if shortages that currently are causing such delays will affect this and any efforts to make these customers whole and get replacement cars sooner versus later? That is a real possibility!
A ship full of Porsches, VWs and Bentleys is on fire, adrift in Atlantic Ocean34 mins ago

Oh NO!!!! Thankfully my car is scheduled to be on a ship soon...Sorry for those that are going to be affected.
For the grace of god man..got my car and took delivery on 24 Jan but all for that and a southern shipping route and maybe timing...could have been my car. Sorry for those who lost their cars. Hope Porsche makes them whole quickly!
This sucks for everyone waiting on their delivery. Mine got delivered few months back, but honestly I did had a scary thoughts of something like this few times when mine was onboarded and on way.
Yeah. happens from time to time. I know the vehicle insurers must be like sick...what was the loss like $250M some have said? Ouch!

The EV batteries are not discharged. Li-ion batteries are shipped charged all the time. At this point the only known info is that the fire started in the hold of the ship. That does not mean the cargo started the fire. It could be a leaky fuel line or damaged electrical cable on the ship. Once a fire gets going, if it's not going to be contained quickly, it will only grow and be fed by what's in the ships hold. Get a tire on fire and it burns crazy hot and for a long time. Think about the bumpers and how much plastic is on these or other cars. If the ship goes down, then it's going to be a very long time if they ever know what happened or if they even go with a salvage team. Will depend on the depth and who is going to pay for everything. Doing salvage operations in the open ocean is not cheap.

The last time this happened in 2019, where a similar cargo ship caught fire and sunk with a load of ltd edition Porsche's (and Bentley's) on board, in the years running up to the incident, a safety report noted: fire fighting (equipment) was "inoperative"; electrics "unsafe"; and fire drills among the crew "lack of knowledge".

https://robindesbois.org/wp-content/uploads/Deficiences-Grande-America-Digest.pdf

I wonder if, where these cargo ships work to maximise profit, if corners were cut both with the ship and staff training, causing another incident.

All cargo is insured, so in the worst case...

If it was a parked EV combusting, there would be at least one other example among Porsche's or Tesla's. So my guess - as good as anyone's - is either a fault with the ship or a careless member of the crew started it.

Ca. 800 Porsche on board. We do not know the product mix yet. Let’s suppose 200 Taycan lost (will be less) that is roughly 2-3 days production capacity of this model variant.
So I do not expect significant delays on future deliveries.
Maybe the missing ship is a bigger issue as a lost transportation capacity.
That is another thing, owners of the cars lost will need extra 4-6 months waiting time that is really sad.
Depending on the fire and how fast they can get the ship to port to salvage it, there might be a lot of cars still good to deliver?
