I was considering the brake upgrade for my build on the 4S. According to Porsche the regenbraking (up to 265kW) is expected to handle 90% of all braking.. why the upgrade then? Well for me it was due to the coating on the upgraded set which is more ressistant to corrossion. But here is a plot twist. According to the Porsche Denmark Taycan specialist technician the braking system automatically applies the disc from time to time to avoid the corrosion which makes the upgraded kit redundant IMO. Moreover according to him Porsche Service are not expecting disc replacement due to tear/wear but due to age!!
I allready have a race car so the Taycan is my planned as my dayli driver ;)
Any thoughts on the subject?

The brakes are a vanity purchase, and I say that as someone getting the ceramics. There’s no kill like overkill. If you’re super concerned about corrosion due to your climate, you could consider the PSCB. but probably still excessive.

Totally agree - I’m sticking with red calibers, they are not that visible after all due to the 20” splitspoke wheel design.

Anyway back when the Boxster was launched the Black calibers were the standard and the Red were the upgrade option (on the Boxster S). Now we pay more to have Black in sted of Red calibers ;)

Are there any significant benefits in terms of performance? Will they brake better? Better for emergency situations? some other things?

no. Overall the performance characteristics are the same for street use. The ceramics are much cleaner with almost no brake dust and last much longer. Under heavy use (the track) ceramics won’t fade as Iron brakes do after they get very hot. Ironically many people won’t track them because it’s not cost effective. It’s cheaper to replace iron brakes more often on the track.

none of this matters for the taycan unless you plan to track it

They will brake better, going from 6 to 10 piston and a lot more brake area. And the car is very heavy.
when you see the yellow or white calibers they look like on a super car. So huge.
but I have not seen the red ones yet.
and of cause there will be normal brakes is black when we se the lesser versionsof the Taycan. Hard choices

I do agree a bit that there is a bit of vanity involved, but I think the larger steel brakes look the part for the car. The standard 4S brakes look to me a bit out of place for such a large car and 20 inch wheels. I know you might not really need them apart from really hammering it, but they look nice

The Ceramics are probably over the top, and they are not without issues either. They certainly have a lot stopping power but can be sensitive to washing car and not making sure the brakes dry. And as somebody said if you track them they can wear out and are not cheap to replace.

OK.....please excuse my ignorance but........looking strictly at caliper color....what color is standard on a 4S.....or with the 21" wheels?
Is caliper color and option I am missing on the configurator?
Thanks in advance.

Red is standard on the 4S and if you use the 19” wheels (for winter?) the ONLY option as I see it due to the larger diameter on the upgraded brake sets. If you go for 21 inch wheels Mission E style “ab werk” a brake upgrade is needed to the PSCB which comes in white calipers (cheapest) or black calipers (extra option). You can also go mad and order the Ceramic PCCB which are more expensive and come with Yellow calipers og Black Calipers (extra option).
All other 20” and 21” wheels are OK as I see it with the standard red calipers.

I just test drove my local dealers newly arrived demo turbo. The car handled beautifully, accelerating and stopping like a much lighter car. I found the braking great, especially in lower speed traffic where regen wouldn’t play as much of a role in stopping.
The sales person said the larger rotors and 10 piston calipers of PSCB (standard on the turbo) make a noticeable difference. Since I haven’t driven any other Taycan to compare it with I can’t validate that, but it was enough to confirm them on my option list.
I sure you can’t go wrong either way.

I stuck with the stock wheels, therefor the option to upgrade the brakes is not available. I did switch the calipers to gloss black instead of red.

Didn't they downsize the caliper for the coated brakes in 2021 due to supply issue?

I found the standard red brakes insufficient. I had a first generation Audi S7 previous, and the Audi emergency braking performance was significantly better than my 4S.

However, I don't know if it has more to do with the brakes or the car's weight and the timing the friction brakes kicking in.
