I'd argue this is a "mitigation" not a "fix"…

Porsche markets and sells the PMC+/PMCC as a 40 amp charger - but as you point out and other threads they have chosen to ship their EVSE's with substandard cable and then recommend you no longer use them as 40 amp chargers.

that is not a fix - it's a workaround/mitigation - they should replace the 40 amp supply cables with 8 or 6 gauge supply cable's rather than the 10 gauge cable they designed for the 32 amp 918 Spyder Hybrid nearly a decade ago.

it's just wrong, it's poorly designed, they have acknowledged it's wrong, and to date they've done nothing about it - it is clearly not Porsche at it's best.

at this point in time they should refund the money and the $1120 Porsche EVSE cost will more than cover a high quality 40 amp EVSE replacement.
Are there any advantages to using the Porsche charger over another brand? I thought I read somewhere on here that with the Porsche charger you can monitor the charging status thru the app or something like that? I realize that’s just a convenience and not a worthwhile reason to choose a better faster charger and one that won’t burn your house down ?? but just wondering on any advantages. Thanks!!

no major advantages with regards to actually charging the car - all charging control is via the vehicle not the charger - the design of these chargers are such that they should not be vendor specific - the EVSE (the PMCC/PMC+) simply are fancy on/off power-flow controllers - the actual charger is in the vehicle.

Any J-1772 charger for North American can charge any North American EV - it has to be that way otherwise you couldn't use public chargers or chargers at other people's homes.

the PMCC can join a Wifi network and you can view usage statistics via the porsche web portal - but there is no "control" just access to charging statistics.

there is no reason to avoid other high quality alternatives.

if purchasing a non-mobile "home" charger I recommend

ClipperCreek HCS-50 or HCS-60
ChargePoint
Tesla Wall Charger
Porsche Wall Charger
Juicebox

but there are other high quality alternatives that will easily charge the Taycan not overheat.

That’s a feature of the car and app for the car. I monitor it without the Porsche evse.

The ChargePoint Flex home charger keeps track of your charging sessions on their server so you can view a consumption report to determine how much electricity the car is using.

The advantage of the PMC+ is that it comes for free with the car.
This. It burns me to spend money (eating into the gas savings of the car) for a better EVSE.

I am however considering the following:

- EA Homestation
- Wallbox

Part of my purchase decision is access to detailed charging cost stats, as this is something I track (currently in a spreadsheet but working on an app.)

Even if I buy a new EVSE I still want the Porsche one to work as advertised, as it will go in my trunk as an emergency charger.

from Porche, nothing comes for free even if it’s free :giggle:

I have a Wallbox and it works just fine. Also, it will tell you how many KW you consume and if you know what the utility is charging, you get the cost too.

if you ask my children the word "free" is a pet-peeve/trigger word for me

it's not "free" it is "included" - I agree there is no incremental cost, but it's not free

I do however agree that since it is included there is low incentive to purchase a non-free alternative - unless of course the included EVSE isn't doing the job.

I keep having so many problems with my included EVSE from Porsche that I tend to use my alternative EVSE's because they "just work" where as I have to keep fussing with the Porsche stuff…

Porsche makes great vehicles, but they have a long way to go in the EV space…

The advantage of the PMC+ is that it comes for free included with the car at no extra cost.

Better?

Also, it worked perfectly fine for me for 360 days and almost 18,000 miles of charging. Not sure why it's now overheating.

I need to charge my Tesla Y and the Taycan, and the PMC+ would always (unless I cut the power to 50%) trigger a fault with the Tesla. It charged the Taycan fine but faulted with the Tesla.

So I ended up moving to a new Juicebox 40, which works fine with both the Tesla and Taycan. I had an older model Juicebox since 2015, but last winter I ran over the power cable and broke it.

What's interesting is that the power cable on the Juicebox and the PMC+ seem to be the same diameter.

Right?! It's like when my wife shows me the "free gift(s)" she received after spending an enormous amount of money on whatever products. ?
