I recently scratched one of my doors. It’s pretty minor but still visible. I sent the picture to my Porsche dealer and they sent me back a quote of $6500 which said I will pay $0 and insurance will pay the full amount.

This amount seems high and I was under the impression it wasn’t good to use insurance for these sort of things?

is it ok to use a body shop that isn’t my Porsche Dealer as the quote seems high? That being said is there any good way to go about doing this?

thanks for any help.

I’d probably do this without insurance to avoid any kind of carfax note, which could impact your resale value.

The dealership doesn’t automatically report it since they gave me that quote with the insurance included ?

If you have a good relationship with one of the Porsche staff (i.e. the sales person who sold the car) have a quiet word and ask if they outsource the jobs. My wife's BMW got keyed by a junkie. The BMW sales guy gave her the number of a paint shop they send their paint jobs too. He charged half the BMW quote and no VAT. There was a Ferrari in his workshop among other supercars. Job was perfect. I wasn't impressed that BMW charged twice as much and then used this guy anyway.

I would look around your area to see if there are any other Porsche authorized repair shops. We have them in our area. They will probably do it for 1/2 that price or less. Especially since it just looks like it needs to be buffed out and painted.

There are also scratch repair places around that will come to your location and do repairs but yours might be a little too extensive.

Never take bodywork to the dealer. They'll just drive your car to a bodyshop and charge you a premium.

Any good body shop should be able to repair that for a thousand or 2. Ask your dealer what body shop they use or just google.

That quote TBH is pretty outrageous imo - def take advice above and get a good local bodyshop to estimate a repair. That said, hard to tell from your pic how deep the scratches are i.e. are there actual 'gouges' or is this more superficial clear coat damage?

You'd be amazed what a good detailer can do (if not so inclined yourself) in 'cutting' down surface scratches on clear coat - in some cases can bring damage like this back to practically new (albeit with some clear coat obviously thinned in the worked areas) - if you have a random orbital tool and som cutting paste etc. you could test yourself on a few to see how you fare (can always start with just the pads if not feeling confident with an orbital tool).

That’s bonkers. It’s not even dented. Any good bodyshop here (UK) would fill, sand and respray for less than £500 so I’d say $1,000 for a quality job.

How deep are the scratches? If they mildly catch or not catch at all, I'd do as @ciaranob suggests, get a detailer to make it less visible. If you need it "perfect", get it resprayed.

$6500 to repaint a door that isn't even dented is ridiculous. Since insurance is apparently on the hook for the full amount of the repair, my guess is that the dealership is padding the estimate big time in hopes that you will accept their bid and they can make a huge profit.

Go somewhere else. It appears those scratches are through to the primer coat and, if so, an attempt to "rub them out" will be unsuccessful. Still, a top-quality repaint shouldn't cost more than a $1000-$1500.

It looks like it may polish out. If not a good body shop would be able to get or at least match the porsche paint very closely. £1000 maximum here i'd say, getting it done yourself rather than via insurance co.

I'm note entirely sure how your insurance works (excess, no claims bonus etc) , and dealers will often 'fully charge' for insurance jobs - and quote to paint half the car to blend it etc, but it would be totally over the top.

Personally if i received the quote you got, I'd tell the dealer to 'insert expletive' and let them know I'd be buying my next car elsewhere. Totally taking the p*ss out of you.

One suggestion. Are you a member of PCA? I would reach out to my local chapter and talk to a few members - you will find them to be very friendly and helpful. I am guessing that they have one or two local specialists that do this type of work on a daily basis............and most of them talk from experience...................similar to yours.

What is the scope of work being performed for $6500? Can’t assess whether it’s reasonable without a detailed scope of work.
