Is the new 19.2 kW on board charger worth it?

Longing for a Taycan….

but my Model S is equipped with Tesla’s “dual charger” option, allowing it to pull 80amps from the tesla wall charger (on a 100amp breaker). So sounds similar.

I found this faster charging rate quite useful because I have a long-ish commute. Plus with young kids, as soon as I get home I am back out again going to sports, shopping, or other things. Definitely a plus in winter, when my “very optimistic” range drops and I need to charge before my typical overnight one.

it’s interesting that Tesla did away with the 80amp charger, and their wall chargers are now capped at 48. Might have something to do with 3 melted charge cables and ports I went through….maybe.

I hope this option from Porsche is solid. Again, it’s not really necessary, but definitely a nice thing to have especially in colder climates

I’ve been using an 18kW EVSE with my Taycan for a little over 2 years (26k miles). The EVSE (Watzilla) failed once early on, but otherwise, no real issues with charging.

Your use case is similar to mine, where we have lots of running around to do in a single day so wanted to charge at home between stops at fast as possible.

There were early issues with the 19.2kW breaking Plug & Charge when it was first released in MY 2021 and another issue with incompatibility with certain EA DC chargers (although, I don’t think it was ever determined or revealed if the underlying issue was with Porsche or EA), but nothing else I’m aware of and those have both been long resolved AFAIK.

80 amps is no big deal with appropriately sized wire. 1000 amps is no big deal with appropriately sized wire. 4 amps will fry undersized wire. The point is, it’s the sizing, not the amps. Taycan is perfectly fine with 80A. There are several suggestions in other threads for 19.2kW EVSE.

apparently so is porsche - they never responded to my formal service request…

i mean, wouldn't you think this is a faulty unit, breaker, sensor, software.. something? -- have you tried another unit? just curious.

i would think this is a thermal issue but not if the amperage has no effect on the issue. then i might think software. firmware. but. clearly you know what you are doing, dave, and i assume all this has been thought of. *shrug*. pita. hate it when something just doesn't work right. in addition to curtailing the 'getting things done' instinct, it also tweaks the ocd. grrr.

i own two porsche pmcc’s and both behave the same

I've used the one that come with my 2020 Taycan and the one that came with my 2021 Cayenne Hybrid - both behaved the same - although full disclosure - I haven't used them again since packing them up and replacing them with my Tesla J-1772 Wall Chargers

I've given up on the PMCC's and useful devices and packed them away - all charging has been handled by Tesla Wall Chargers since oct. of 2022 - the PMCC's are _NOT_ missed and not active/tested/used at all anymore … they will be provided with the vehicle's they came with when sold/traded.

I have the same experience - 22 to 24 AMPS is about as high is it will go with tripping fault message.

Agreed.

what was happening was the end of the plug was getting singed, to the point of melting, subsequently damaging the chargeport as well. All three were tesla spec installed by their installers. Wiring fine….perhaps an inherent flaw in the plug.

or just bad luck…and they phased out the 80amp based on usage data etc. but either way sucks for me. Now I have the hardware to draw 80amps, but am limited to 48 because they don’t sell the chargers any more. No point in swapping out chargers (yet) as I’m counting my pennies to jump ship to a Taycan

but yes, very convenient to be able to top up battery when having to run around (or if you forget to charge night before)

Yeah, I’m worried that Porsche may not continue with it too based on low usage, but I hope they continue to offer it because I will continue to spec it.

Agree. My wife forgets all of the time (it’s her DD). But she also loses her phone at least once a day. The number of times I’ve gone out to the car at 15% charge or less is silly. So, faster at home charging if I have a small amount of time before I have to leave helps too. it’s easy for others to dismiss this as our fault or that it’s not a real problem, but it continues to happen so….19.2kW (or 18 for me) is nice to have for this reason (in addition to others).

Hello,

I am currently using a Tesla with Adair wall charger.
I am now “building” a Taycan 4 cross turismo.

I am planning to install a wall charger (similar to Tesla) either the Porsche one or a 3rd party. - don’t t want to use just the plug plus I keep it outside in the driveway.

I am trying to decide if I should add the $1,680 19.2 Kw on- board charger to my build.? Does it make a significant difference? It seems useful but not sure.
Please advise.

Thank you in advance.
Probably a good addition with a new build. Our local Porsche service center quoted me $2400 for the part and $3500 to install the 19.2 KW on-board charger.

As I said, above, I would definitely do it. It’s great to have the flexibility, even if you decide not to put in a 19.2 kW charger right away.

I checked and unfortunately I’m locked and too far into the process to make any changes.

you'll be fine…honestly you will.

congrats on the new car - it's going to be great- the 19.2 kW charging option is nice but infrequently used.

focus on the 157,543 other things about the Taycan that are great - this one detail isn't going to matter in the grand scheme of things.
