From what I could gather so far, it is well established that, in cold climates, the range will suffer (not a Taycan-specific problem) and that the Taycan handles exceedingly well in snow.

For those of you in cold climates, have you noted any other issues that might negatively impact the experience? I live in the Midwest and -40F windchills are not uncommon. The vehicle will be garaged overnight, however will be parked outside during the day. — TIA

Charging speeds are dimished when the battery is cold. Fortunately Porsche has included a heat/cool feature that works on the cabin & battery and can be operated from the app. Taycan is one of the few EVs that displays the battery temperature. If the charging speed is slow the battery temperature can be displayed to see if that is the cause.

Yes there are some good posts in the Charging forum. You will only get 50-70kwh into a battery at 5*c-20*c (using a Porsche supercharger). After that it starts to ramp up. So far the fastest I have achieved is 150kwh at 30*c. It will take at least 25 minutes to get to 20*c from 5*c. The preheat option and setting the charger in the navigation to prepare the battery will gain a good 6-8*c on top of the 5*c. Starting from 11*c-13*c does make a difference.

Charging, range, and phantom battery loss are the cons. As you mention, this is true of all EVs in the cold.

Otherwise I haven't heard of any specific Taycan-related issues in the cold. It stays nice and toasty warm and performs great in the snow. Ground clearance isn't spectacular but in normal and lift you should be fine on streets with moderate snow coverage, just don't go plowing through any snowdrifts!

I think your summary is right. The car is excellent in snow - I drive it in sketchy conditions all the time including about 5 minutes ago. The traction control does allow the back end to come out a little more than some cars (e.g., Lexus), but it is well controlled, you just need to be aware of it.

Biggest issue is to watch the range. If it gets real cold and you blast the heater, defrost, etc., you are going to see your range really drop, but that is life in an EV.

My car with winter tires has performed exceptionally well on snow covered roads. Reduced range is the only cold weather issue I’ve noticed.

Thank you all! I am concerned about random error messages due to frozen sensors, frozen door handles, rattling noises etc? - any issues in that neighborhood?

I live in the Midwest.
This is our first winter with the Taycan, but no issues to report.
Just the range drop.

Actually,.you can get more than that. Last week I used a 350kW EVSE and had 40% SOC with a 5C battery temp. Charge rate was low 44kW which rose to 101kW @ 32C battery. SOC had risen to 80% and then slowed down as expected.

If I'd started at 32C then I would expect perhaps somewhere near 200kW.

Some sensors do complain if they get dirty from snow or sand/salt, but I have never had an issue just because it was cold.

I have never had an issue with the door handles per-se. Twice the whole car was covered in ice and all the doors were iced shut, but that would impact any car. The nice thing about it being an EV is that you can pre-heat the car which frees up the doors. In other words, it is better than an ICE car in that regard.

If it is really cold (like -15F), I do hear a few squeaks but honestly at that temp, I have bigger concerns, and the squeaks have been quite minor.

I haven't found that yet. I collect data to keep me occupied while charging because I am sad like that. This is the latest charge. I only get the magic 150kwh between 30-35*c. So even if I pitched up with a 30*c battery and say 40% charge (before the energy throttle) I am only looking at 150kwh until it hits 35*c. Noticed the energy throttle kicked in at 92% falling to 44kwh. I don't have a home charger so charge weekly and this data is pretty consistent. Of course it could be the charger.

If you're interested you can check out a recent report of my first full-on Winter with my 2021 Taycan 4S.

Here's the link:

https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/t...rctic-blast-2022-stuttgart-strikes-back.8584/

We have had a quite brutal winter here in Western Canada, and it hasn't gotten much better. Supposed to be -19C tomorrow. Brrrr.

I have been driving this beast all winter with virtually NO issues whatsoever. A couple times a bit of ice build-up annoyed the various sensors but really it's so minor, it's not even a problem.

This is my first EV and honestly I cannot ever think of why I would EVER go back to an ICE vehicle. :)

Not sad at all!

Many variables at play as we know not least the available power to the EVSE and if shared with other units at the charging location.

Fortunately I don't rely on public charging that often but it would be nice to think you could get nearer to the advertised 270kW on a pre-conditioned battery each and every time.

270kwh would be amazing since I charge weekly. I would be done in 15 mins. Still the Porsche staff are nice. They offer me a coffee and I walk the mutt around a bit.

how is that you cannot get 230-250 peak (not average)? I had 200-205 (peak) at one Ionity, end of Dec, -8 celsius (that is 17 F), initial SOC 11% and 28 celsius initial battery temp. And with the PCM battery protection on...
I think I could get more if I unticked the PCM option.
