I ordered a 25 foot cable with my Porsche charger for my Taycan. Charger
getting extremely hot .
A warning about overheating appeared on the screen.
Also- having problems connecting car to charger.
Electrician who installed charging station is coming to my house this week.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks

You have 3 options
  1. Lower the amperage of PMCC. This is the easiest thing to try if you don't mind a lower charging speed.
  2. Buy another charger.
  3. Move to a colder climate or cool down your garage.

Maybe also "4. Keep the lid open while charging" if one would have installed the PMCC in its wall box?

edit: @bgatxy1 beat me to it.

Maybe 5. Has anyone tried just putting a fan on it? I’ve done this with drives when their fans fail to keep them running until there’s a replacement. You’d have to have the dock door open (or better yet, get rid of the dock. It’s a bad idea to enclose it more than necessary.)

I also wonder if the thermal trip point for the PMCC is just too low.

FWIW I have not (yet?) experienced overheating issues and I live in S. Florida. It is mounted low on the wall at the garage door (closer to fresh air) and I keep garage doors open in the summer in the evenings.

I am considering a hole saw to vent. A fan as well but would have to wire fan. Overall easier to switch to a different charger as much as that sucks.

Porsche USA has been unhelpful. The dealer is unhelpful. My plug has actually melted to small extent. Do not charge over 32 Amps if in hot climate, especially if inside Porsche dock.

The issue here is clearly that the pigtail to the charger is 10 AWG. That is 30 Amps maximum continuous.

the PMCC for the North American market is unfortunately substandard and way way over priced - recomend you review 60 amp EVSE’s (48 amp charge rate 60 amp breaker) - I recommend the ClipperCreek HCS-60 if your wiring can handle it.

If it cools sufficiently with the door open, then I think you have a decent chance at adding a hole in the top and bottom for convection cooling.

FWIW, I pull around 78 amps on my EVSE for hours at a time and I’ve only seen everything get to around 120F, even in a hot Midwestern garage.

There seems to be a design issue with the PMCC. Does anyone know if the PMC+ has similar issues? I haven’t even used mine yet. Even if I do, I can only run it at 20A.

Hey @Dweezel1 could you grab a few IR pictures at the start of charging and a few times over the first few minutes? Wondering if all the heat is coming from the receptacle, or from the NEMA 14-15 adapter as well. Copper is highly thermally conductive so you'd have to capture it at the beginning to see if there is a localized source of heat (receptacle) or the whole adapter is heating up. Either way, that heat is just wasted $...

the whole cord heats up because it’s at the limit for continous load for 40 amps - temp raise in right in line with expected temp levels for gauge 10 wire…

nothing to see here - porsche has an electrically “safe” supply cord that gets too hot for expectations of a high end consumer device - the wire should be at least 8 or 6 gauge wire which would cause less heat…

the actual temperature raise above ambient and about of heat being given off exactly matches expected thermals for the electrical current and wire gauge. But it is technically not a safety issue because the wire is not getting hot enough to cause insulation to melt or induce an electrical short.

it’s boarder line and inexcusible for a high end expensive component for which Porsche charges gouges an extreme market premium (serious their price for this POS is really really out of line and it is by no means best of breed) - but it’s unfortunately not bad enough to actually be “unsafe”.

it’s just a crappy product at too high a price.
